Outlook could not find requested contact (2002/XP)

    Hi,

Is there a limit or a 'feature' in Outlook that stops you from finding contacts that exist? If I use the 'Find a Contact' search box and type in a name that I know exists, it comes back that it cannot find it.

I first thought that it may not like contacts I enter via my PalmPilot, but it seems that it doesn't like some contacts that I created within Outlook itself, possibly any created after I upgraded from Office2K to XP (and Win2K to XP at the same time).

Any one able to shed any light?

    Cheers,
    Lee

Do you find the contacts that Outlook can't find reside in a particular folder or address book? That would suggest that Outlook is unaware it needs to also look there. From Inbox, TOOLS, EMAIL ACCOUNTS, VIEW OR CHANGE ADDRESS BOOK

    Hi Eowyn,

    Thanks for your comments. I've become even MORE baffled! <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

If I go to 'Contacts' via the Folder List in Outlook I have one set of people. If I search via the little box in the main toolbar, or click on the address book icon next to it, I get completely different lists of people. The list in the 'Contacts' list found via the Folder List is the correct list -- so how do I get Outlook to point to it every time? What file extension am I looking for?

    Cheers,
    Lee

From the Folder List, right-click on the Contacts, select Properties, and on one of the tabs is a checkbox that says something like View as Outlook Address Book. Save & close.

Now, once again, TOOLS, EMAIL ACCOUNTS, VIEW OR CHANGE ADDRESS BOOK. If there is an entry there, select CHANGE... and make sure that your Contacts folder is listed. I haven't a clue what file extension, because using this method you won't see a file extension.
