File ok till we try to print, copy (Word XP)

We have two files with Tracked Changes that have gone through extensive review. One is only four pages, the other is 56 pages, in Final showing changes view. We can work in these files and do anything - except we cannot get them to print. Sometimes they will open in Print Preview, sometimes that causes failure also. When we do File>Print, it appears that the .doc will start to spool ( we see it in the printer window) but after a minute or so we then get the little message box informing us that Word does not feel well and wants to call in sick. <img src=/S/barf.gif border=0 alt=barf width=64 height=23> We've tried doc restore, saving to rtf and back, and we would have tried copying all but the last paragraph mark but attempting to copy also locks up the works. ( I just mis-typed "cocks up the works" - maybe that's mopre appropriate.)

Help? (Sorry-proprietary documents- no samples available)

    Hi Ed:
There may be more than one thing happening here. As far as the copying is concerned, have you tried copying small portions of the document? If you cannot find the source of corruption, it is usually quicker to split the document in half and see which half is now corrupted, split THAT in half, and continue until you find the corrupted part, than copy/paste the whole document to a new document (which will not guarantee that you have fixed the corruption). Test after each cut & paste. If it works, save it

    Edward--

Can you look in Event Viewer putting "eventvwr.msc" in the run box and under Applications and Systems seem if you get any useful information going to the time when you're getting that "call in Sick" type error or does that error you've seen have any number attached?

    Phil:

Thanks for your reply - saving to HTML and back worked for the short file - the long file is still giving me fits.

Thanks also. Actually - when attempting to print - we just get 'not responding' - the program barfed when trying to copy - I'm going to try a couple more things but if I come up with an error number I will post it.

Thanks to both responders! A little bit of each approach saved the day. Final report -- solution is in eliminating some text boxes which had been inserted by reviewers. When I went through and properly anchored each text box, it turns out that there were other frames or drawing objects underneath. One of these had an odd (to me) appearance, with "crop" lines around it. For what it's worth, I also checked all of the reviewer names to see who had "touched" the file -- one name stood out as someone I remember is a Mac user. This person also worked on the short file, so I'm wondering if that had anything to do with it.
