    xp and win98

    Good morning,

I hope someone can guide us with our problem. The set up connected with a switch are 1 laptop (win2000) and on PC (win98).The firewall is open for all traffic. The machines have fixed IP addresses We can see both in the domain, but we cannot make a connection win98 versus winXP. Het win98-pc asks for a networkpassword. My friend has no knowledge of the networkpassword on his win200 laptop.
Can anyone of you guide us in rsolving this question?
    TIA

    1) Is the machine XP or 2000? You said both.
    2) Are you really running a domain server or is your network peer-to-peer?

If I recall correctly, Windows 98 has 3 kinds of logons, Windows, Family, and Microsoft Networking. I believe you have to log on to Microsoft Networking in order to network, but the password could well be the same as the Windows password on the same machine. (I don't remember an example of them being different unless there is an NT domain involved.)

Then the next question is whether the two boxes can see each other...

Make sure the XP firewall is off then make sure the XP machine has the exact same log in set up as the 98 machine.

    Re: xp and win98

    Hi,
thank you for the suggestions. The two machines are connected via an interior network (switch) ar ar worling in the same workgroup and each of them have a fixed ip address. One windows 2000 pc and one windows98. I suspect as ealier mentionnedthat a firewall on th win200 pc prevents the logon to this machine. I'll communicat the info tomy frien when seeing him this weekend.
