    Hi SMBP,

    Thanks for the info, I'm downloading it. Hope some improvements were made (the last version looked pretty much like Drive Rescue). Hey it's <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> anyway, right? <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Let me know how you like it. One thing I couldn't tell from their site is that I had heard it also had a component that would erase from the hard drive the way the US military and maybe some other governments use for erasing information (although Massachusetts Institute of Technology has an ongoing research project where no matter what damage is done to a hard drive they have been able to recover an amazing amount of material, including from the edges). I could be confused about an entirely different program, but I'll do my best to sort this out.

    Re: PC Inspector 3X (New Version) Free File Recovery

    Sysinternals offers a utility called SDELETE that will try to wipe blank areas of a disk, as well as wipe a file. In the C source code for the program is this information:

    // SecureOverwrite
    //
    // This function implements a secure santize of rigid (removable
    // and fixed) disk media as per the Department of Defense clearing
    // and sanitizing standard: DOD 5220.22-M
    //
    // The standard states that hard disk media is sanatized by
    // overwriting with a character, then the character's complement,
    // and then a random character. Note that the standard specicically
    // states that this method is not suitable for TOP SECRET information.
    // TOP SECRET data sanatizing is only achievable by a Type 1 or 2
    // degauss of the disk, or by disintegrating, incinerating,
    // pulverizing, shreding, or melting the disk.

    The program runs slowly, but then, I was running it on the computer I'm turning in for re-use, not my main machine, so this wasn't a huge problem.

    Hi SMBP,

    I've had an issue with the installation (Win98). When the program is preparing the Installshield assistant, an error kicks in and that's it. It also causes Vsmon.exe (which belongs to ZoneAlarm) to shut down... <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>

    Sorry about that. It advertises to be 98 compatible--just one of those install things I guess. You might try again with ZA shut off but of course you shouldn't have to uninstall ZA to get any program in. I have an idea though--try installing it in Safe Mode and see if that shakes the glitch.

    This looks interesting--I'll give it a look thanks. Also the MIT project is very interesting--I saw a couple of their PhD computer science guys demonstrate their extreme recovery project which will convince you that almost nothing is truly erasable on Tech TV. I'll see if something is on MIT's web site.
