    Removing unwanted item from taskbar

One of the folders from my desktop suddenly became duplicated in the middle portion of the taskbar at the bottom of my screen. (Name of folder appears, with one of those draggable raised handles at the left end; no icon.)

    How do I remove it?

When you say "middle portion" does that mean it's NOT in the Tray (Notification Area) or on the QuickLaunch toolbar? I can't seem to duplicate what you're describing on my Win98 machine - i.e. I don't know what you mean by "raised handles." If one of the folders on your desktop is open and minimized on the taskbar, you should be able to close it by right-clicking. If it's open when you re-boot the machine, could it be in the Startup folder, with properties set to run "minimized?"

Re: Removing unwanted item from taskbar

What you did is drag one of your desktop folders to the taskbar. It then becomes a toolbar which can remain there, float, or dock at any side, top or bottom. To remove it:
    1. Right click on the folder that's on the taskbar or on any part of the taskbar.
    2. Select toolbars & a menu will expand that includes the name of the folder & a checkmark next to it.
    3. Click on the folder name.

You can remove built-in toolbars from the taskbar in the same way, except they aren't permanently deleted.

    Hope this helps,

Can't he just right-click on the folder and select "Close Toolbar"?

    Yep. I didn't see that option (apparently right above Toolsbars). <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15> That's two less clicks.
