Autofilters using top 10 percent (Excel 2002)

I am stumped with an aspect of autofiltering. I have a list of salaries, sorted in descending order, and ask for a filter of the top 10 percent. I do not understand what is being returned to me- top 10 percent of what? It is not the top 10% of the sum of the salaries so I am confused. Thanks as always for the help and insight!

Top 10% of occurences. It is liked you sorted the values. Multiplied the count by 10% and then would list the highest of this many.

For example. If you have a list of 1000 items the top 10% is equivalent to the top 100 items.

It is equivalent to finding the values that are greater than 90% Percentile of the data.
