Font Color Button does not function (Word 2000)

I am sure someone has asked this before, but could not find it. Although while searching the pages have found a number of very good information! Thanks! I have been working with WORD 2000 (part of Office 2000 Pro) for quite a while now, usually w/o problems, except for that peculiar Font Button on the tool bar. If I want to change the color of some selected text, then click on the down-arrow next to the *A* to select the color, nothing happens. If the color under the A is different than black, clicking on it will change the color of the selected text. In order to get the color box I have to go to Format/Font then click on the color box, THEN the color box next to the tool-bar A will appear. It's not a biggie, just annoying. I have tried to save the settings to the normal.dot template by clicking on a color but that doesn't work, it goes back to the unresponsive A. Any ideas? Thanks <img src=/S/artist.gif border=0 alt=artist width=34 height=29>

Something might have happened to the button.
    1. Go to Tools/Customize.../Commands tab.
    2. Drag the Font Color button right off the Formatting toolbar.
    3. Back in the dialog box, under Categories, choose Format.
    4. Under Commands, scroll for that capital A with the underline where it says Font Color.
    5. Drag it back to the Formatting toolbar.

When you close Word, if it asks to save changes to the normal template, say Yes.
    Cheers,

Re: Font Color Button does not function (Word 2000)

Thanks, Phil. I tried it right away because I have had "broken" buttons before, and didn't think of it this time, but, alas, it doesn't do it. Once I close Word, then open it again, the button stays mute. It has done it ever since I installed Office 2000. Oddly enough, my mother in Germany, who has a fairly new computer with Word 2000 installed, has the same problem. I had to tell her about the "work around" through Formatting because she, too, uses the Font Color button a lot. So maybe this is a bug?

    Hi Foxrose:
No, this shouldn't happen & usually doesn't. Try resetting all the menus by going to Tools/Customize.../Toolbars tab. The click the Formatting menu & click Reset & the OK (for normal.dot).

    IF that doesn't work, then try the steps listed in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>. This is a problem that should have a cure. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Re: Font Color Button does not function (Word 2000)

Thanks for the additional help, but the "easy way" didn't do it, either. BUT, I checked to entire formatting task bar to load, and the color button DOES work on the formatting bar, but NOT on my customized bar. So I think I'll rework the ready-made formatting bar to suit my needs, and that should do the trick. However, I will dig into the instructions of your correction suggestions in your post 197827, they are very informative. But first I'll be off on some R&R to the beach. Will report on the progress of this "problem" (it's more like a challenge) after I return. The only thing that puzzles me is that my mother has the same problem. Her Word is the German version, it came installed on her system, but she has a customized task bar as well (I set it up for her), so maybe it's a family thing... <img src=/S/crazy.gif border=0 alt=crazy width=15 height=15>

Well, I have a feeling that it's the customized toolbar, rather than a family thing. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> Did you put macros on the toolbar or just drag standard Word buttons onto it? Perhaps you saved the toolbar to the wrong template or put the wrong buttons on. Then again, I haven't tried it, so maybe it's a bug when you put the Font color button on a customized toolbar. I was off at the beach today, too. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
    Cheers,
