Nortons AV doesn't work after update (XPHome)

Last week I applied the MS03-039 update from MS after being notified of a critical update.
Now my Nortons Anti Virus doesn't work. It shows in the task bar with shriek (!) on top of the yellow mouse. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall and get the message "Windows Installer is not available".
I have tried running the diagnostics from the XP installation disk. No joy.

Does any one have any clues?

I seem to remember something about this once before and would have done a search but hey!
    cheers

    Phil--

If you give me the version of NAV--I'll do a little searching and see if I can come with any conflicts--with the Symantec KB knowing the version of NAV or System Works helps you search more accurately and quickly-- and what does this look like--"the shriek! on top of a yellow mouse"--you mean something on the Norton icon? What's a shriek!--look like?

Here's one quick thing you can do If you think that the hotfix update caused this, though, and you're having trouble uninstalling NAV--why not quickly uninstall the Hotfix? I'd tell you to go to the registry to uninstall NAV if it were one discrete delte--but with Norton it can be in a lot of places and you could spend all night--I've been there. See if that gets NAV out and in behaving well, then since the hotfix is patching what is considered a critical vulnerability put the hotfix back in.

Can you screenshot what you're describing--I'd just like to see it and understand what it looks like and give me the version of NAV or NSW and if it's Pro or whatever if you don't mind.

    Thanks for your reply

I managed to work around the problem by doing a registry delete. Took sometime and I think I did something wrong as I have now lost all my network connections. Oh well the next step is to do registry rebuild and will be running PC Doctor when I get home tonight.

To answer your query see the attached.

I couldn't figure out how to insert graphics in this reply.

    Phil--

Thanks for the F/U. I'll screenshot your images. What registry key did you delete? I'd like to know.

Yesterday I found the problem. I went to the Symantec site and ran their machine analysis routine. Took sometime but it showed up 3 virus's/worms/trojans. Used their removal tools and instructions, now everything is fine.

The main offenders were " W32.Welchia.Worm" which creates a registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/DIRECTX64 which creates a System 32 sub directory under C:WindowsSystem 32 where the little <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> lurk. The other was W32.HLLW.AFFEE which was removed using their tools.

The reason I got infected was somehow the virus's found a window and got in and disabled Nortons AV. I may have been downloading/installing NAV updates. At the time I was looking in KaZAa for some stuff so I guess that was to blame.

Thanks very much for your help
    cheers
