Footers don't print (2000 (I think))

Hi

My boss' wife uses Word (but I'm not sure what version), and she uses a copyright for her work, so she puts her name as a footer in the bottom righthand corner. However, it always seems that the sheets she prints landscape are fine but portrait cuts off the footer.

Would anyone know why this is?

Sorry for such a general question, but I'm sure it's something really simple!

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on the matter.

Do you know how she gets the name to the bottom right hand corner?

From your description it sounds like this has been done with a tab stop that is set in the correct place for a landscape page. You could change the footer to simply be right aligned and see if that fixes your problem.

I just tested that in Word 2003 (BETA, obviously), and Word changed my right tab stops to center-aligned when I changed from Landscape to Portrait. Do you think this is a new feature?

I just don't want to suggest that in case her version does the same thing??????

Thanks for your reply and help.

How does the attached sample behave for you? It behaves the way I described on Word 2002 SP1

I have put a right tab stop on the right hand edge of the footer in the landscape page, this doesn't print on the portrait page because it is completely off the right hand side.

Another thing you can do is to put a 1 row/3 column table in the footer. You can left, center, & right align the respective columns. However, you must first select the table, right click, & choose Autofit to window. This will make the table measure by percentage. Then you can switch back & forth between different paper sizes & margins and the table will adjust automatically.
Cheers,

Hmmm, weren't you a WordPerfect fan? There's no equivalent to the "align right" code in Word, unfortunately. All done with tab stops or tables.

What might make sense in these cases is to create two Footer styles with tabs appropriate to Portrait and Landscape, and then apply that style as needed. Of course, this also means breaking the "link to previous" for the footer when switching between P and L sections.

My guess is that the printer she is using is a inkjet type printer and these elements are too close to the bottom of the page for that printer to reach. No printers can print right to the edge of the paper as the toner or ink that falls off the edge will gum up the works. This is not normally a problem on laser printers as most can get within about 5mm from all sides. Inkjet printers on the other hand can get pretty close to the sides and top but have a big gap at the bottom where the ink won't go. On an epson printer I once used the gap was 14mm (over half an inch for the Americans).

Can you let us know what printer she is using?

For some reason this escaped me before. If your boss' wife doesn't use the footer for anything except a copyright, you also could avoid using tabs altogether. If you go to the footer & press Ctrl+R, you will right align the copyright with the right margin, no matter whether portrait or langscape.

Stuart, yes, in this instance, the portrait page does not contain the Footer.
jscher2000, yes, I am a devoted WordPerfect fan, but (obviously) must use Word (and try to know Word) for use in business. However, as we don't use Word all the time, I thought this might just have been a known quirk in Word and thought I'd post here to the Knowledgeable Power Users! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

As mentioned, I'll suggest that the boss' wife make sure it's a right-aligned, in case she's used Tabs. If this doesn't work, she can try a Table set to AutoFit.

Thanks for your help. As always, it's very much appreciated.

Brian
