Table style problem (Word 2002 SP-2)

I'm having a problem with a table style that I created in Word 2002. I defined a font color and shading for the heading row (as well as other attributes for the bottom row, etc). When I use the table style in a document, Word applies the shading to the heading row, but not the font color; it remains black. The rest of the attributes that I defined for in the table style are applied to tables as defined.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug? I can find very little in the Word Help or online about Table styles, so it's entirely possible that I am missing some important point about defining them. I welcome any advice that you wise Word folks on this board can give me.

Thanks!

I just experimented with this feature. It seems to have some flaws; for example, it didn't pick up my bottom border the first time, and I don't think it is part of the narrative description even now that it "works." Is the font color listed as part of your narrative description of the style? If not, can you try modifying the style again?

Re: Table style problem (Word 2002 SP-2)

Thanks for your help! My problem remains, but you've lead me to an insight about what might be causing my problem...

When I look at the style definition and select "Header row", I do see the Font color as "Custom" followed by the RGB value that I specified in parentheses.

I'm trying to apply our corporate palette to the table formatting, so that the type in the header and all lines in the table are a specific shade of green, the shading of the header row is a shade of tan, and the type in the rest of the type in the table is black. I think what may be happening is that Word overrides the font color definition (green) for "Header row" with the font color definition for "Whole table" (black). I guess technically Word is doing as I have asked by making the font color for the *whole* table black.. However, I wonder why Word doesn't override the shading and line style settings for the header row as it seems like it should following the same logic. I do wish that Word wouldn't let me specify a color for the font on the header row if it's going to ignore it.

I guess that I need to figure out if there's a way to specify the font color for all rows *other* than the header row. I guess this is worth some additional experimentation on my part to enforce our corporate standards if I can make it behave.

Thanks again for your help!

Hi Donna:
I don't have Word 2002, but your description brings a thought to mind. Is it possible that you've created a character style & that it's not part of the paragraph style? That would explain why it doesn't "stick".

Phil,

Good thought. I think that these table styles are a new breed in Word 2002(neither paragraph nor character style), but your thought provides something another path for me in my investigation. Thanks!

Table styles are indeed a new breed in Word 2002 (along with list styles). I think you should be trying to change the paragraph styles used in the table rather than playing with the table style itself. I wouldn't want the table style to override my paragraph styles in the table (although they can).
