    Launching Word 97 - 2 (Word 97)

    HI,
I often start word by dropping a file on word's desktop shortcut.
But if word is already running, this opens a new copy.
Is there a way to drop a file so it's loaded into the running copy?
    Thanks, Al

Windows looks at the parameters set through the File Types dialog (and stored in the Registry). Depending on your version of Windows, this may be in a slightly different place or work somewhat differently, but the general idea is that from Windows Explorer or My Computer you use Tools>Folder Options...>File Types tab, find DOC or Microsoft Word Documents, and inspect what is listed for the Open command. If "Use DDE" is checked, and the appropriate command string supplied, Word typically will not need to start up a new instance to open a document if it already is running. At least, that is what I have been led to believe. Your mileage may vary.

    Hi Al:
Following up on what Jefferson said, your DDE commands should be as in the attachment.
    Cheers,
