PST and Personal Folder problem (Outlook 2000 SP3)

My wife experienced a serious crash on her XP Home SP-1 PC a couple of days ago and several items were corrupted and/or rearranged. One of the more important items was her Outlook files. It seems that all her personal folders, e.g., Inbox, sent, etc., lost everything back to March of this year. Yet, when I looked in the "C:Program Files/Documents and Settings/her_name/Local Settings/Application Data/Microsoft/Outlook file her "outlook.pst" file was still there. But there is another file named: Personal Folders(1).pst there as well.

So, I opened Outlook and clicked on "File/Open" and browsed to that Personal Folders(1).pst file and when it opened, there was another "Inbox" folder, etc., which contained the missing e-mails.

QUESTION: Is there a way to merge these two files so that in the "Folder List" only her default "Personal Folders" are displayed and all the missing folders which are in the other Personal Folders(1).pst will be added? In other words, I want only 1 "Inbox" etc., and not 2 as there are now. Here's a screenshot of what her "Folder List" currently looks like.

In Outlook 2002, you designate the delivery point for new mail here:

Tools > E-mai Accounts... > View or Change [Next >] > Deliver new e-mail to the following location

Apparently this got switched, or your wift set up a new PST to get around some other problem. You can change the delivery point now and/or drag messages from one Inbox to the other to consolidate them.

... adding to Jefferson's suggestion, you could also import from one PST to the preferred PST using File, Import & Export, ... from a PST.

Unfortunately, she is using Outlook 2000 and those options aren't available. Unless someone can come up with another solution, dragging all her messages from the duplicate folders into the ones of the "outlook.pst" file and then delete the "Outlook Personal(1).pst" file.

You are right as to the possible cause. When the crash occurred, she just blindly created a new folder due to a prompt rather than rebooting and when prompted point to the already existent "outlook.pst" file. Oh well.. just trying to mop up after a disaster.

Delivery location can be set on Office 2000. Try either of these places:

(1) Tools>Services (possibly the third tab) or Tools>Accounts dialog;
(2) Tools>Options dialog

I don't have OL2K handy to look for it, sorry.

Couldn't find what you were referring to in either location, but I resolved the issue nonetheless. I simply moved the contents of each of the duplicate folders into her original "outlook.pst" file to their respective folders and then deleted the unwanted "Personal folders(1).pst" file.

Thanks for trying to help.

My suggestion to Import from one PST to the other will work in OL2k.
