Finding Icons in EXE and DLL files

    OK, so I didn't need <font color=blue>it</font color=blue> then, so I didn't take note of <font color=blue>it</font color=blue>, but I'd like to find <font color=blue>it</font color=blue> now!

"<font color=blue>It</font color=blue>" is a program that will search out and display all the icons buried in EXE or DLL files (in a directory? in the whole C: drive?).

I'm sure there's been discussion of this some weeks/months ago...
Can someone point to the thread, or give me any suggestions? thanks!

I don't know if this is the specific one you want but it does what you ask for. It's IconJack32 from PC Magazine Us version. I like it.

Re: Finding Icons in EXE and DLL files

There are lots around John. I like the PC mag utils, including IconJack32, but they are by subscription only now <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>. Other <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>ware possibilities exist here and here.

Just something to be aware of... Many icons are stored with multiple images in them 16x16, 32x32, different colour depths - 16, 256 etc. Some of these programs allow viewing of all the images; others display only one (default) image. Although I think they all extract the complete resource, it can be a bit confusing when one program reports 6 icons in a .dll while another reports 23 or something.

    Hi John,

At the most basic level, you could use:
    Start|Programs| etc
to highlight any program file, then right-click and choose:
Properties|Change Icon|Browse|Files of Type|All Files (or just the class you want)
to browse through files one at a time. As you select each file, you'll get to see its set of icons.

    Cheers

Re: Finding Icons in EXE and DLL files

    Thanks, everyone!

I can't see that it's worth subscribing to PC Mag's download service for a single program, so I've gone with Alan's suggestion of the PricelessWare.org site (a site whose server seems very flaky?), but perversely I preferred the writeup of Icon Snatcher to either of his suggestions, and it does just what I want, displaying the icons either as 32x32 (what I want) or as 16x16 (of academic interest only!). I'm only wanting to use alternative icons on the desktop for two versions of a program (Sage Instant Accounts, since you ask!), to distinguish them, so I don't need any sophistication! I wanted to avoid ploughing through each individual file to see if it had any icons, and Icon Snatcher gives me a list of files with the number of icons in each.

    Hi John,

Another resource that I think has been mentioned here before is Resource Hacker. The About section of my version points to this web site but it seems it's no longer available there. A google search came up with a plethora of sites.
I haven't needed to make much use of it but you can view the Icons and more stuff contained in EXEs, DLLs, SCRs and some other types.

    Hi Diegol

I've looked at Resource Hacker, but it seems to work on a "select a single file" basis, which doesn't really answer my wish to determine which files in a directory (or even the entire hard disk!) contain icons. Even with Icon Snatcher you have to open each directory, tediously. Unless I've missed something in either program, that is!

John, I know you've already found solutions, and I don't know how this one will compare. It seems to me that I learned about GetIcons here in The Lounge, but I just can't remember. This guy's site is a little flaky, but what the heck, the utility is <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>

    Al

His website seems to be a masterpiece of colour, in the sense of "oooh! here's yet another colour I can use!".

And I observe that he is a cracker, as opposed to a hacker, so even if his GetIcons were any good, I fear my principles would prevent me using it.

Thanks for the suggestion, though (not intended to be a a back-handed compliment!).

    John,

For years I have used a little program named, Icon Snatcher. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. It does everything you asked for. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Re: Finding Icons in EXE and DLL files

First I think you know for fun on breaks from intensive pressure packed computing, you can troll virtually any folder in Windows, Program files, and even unhiding hidden files and many will yield icon stashes--not as efficient as these "Icon Collector" apps possibly, but I do this for fun and have several hundred icons to show for it--and if the folder is notable I have a notepad for icons and copy the file name and make notes.

To prep for Icon Searching, if you haven't seen this--I think I found it somewhere back in the Lounge before:

    Icon War

    You may also want to try out (free);

Sorry I didn't know there was a subscription now. I got it for free and it really is good.

If you scroll up the page, you'll find I've mentioned Icon Snatcher at least twice, before your post!! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
