Automatic replace of relative by absolute paths (Word XP)

We are working with some templates containing linked pictures. In the templates we do have a relative path in the LINK field, but in the resulting documents Word changes them most times to absolute paths. (Which causes some headaches, because of the use of a recent server change.)
Is there any way, how I can prevent this behaviour?

    Thanks,

    Hi Hedgehog,

I'm not sure you can change the behaviour but you can update the paths without too much pain. In <post#=261488>post 261488</post#> you'll find a Word document with a utility macro for doing this.

    Thanks macropod
I thought about writing a macro myself, but if there is already one available :-)

However I need to prevent this automatic replacement for the future. Any idea a part from catching the OnSave event and recreating all links?

    Hi hedgehog,

AFAIK, you can't create a true relative link with a LINK field. Although you may be able to omit the path if both the source and destination files are in the same folder, Word still interprets these as a form of absolute reference - as you'll soon find out if you move the linked files to another folder.

Re: Automatic replace of relative by absolute paths (Word XP)

    Hi macropod

Perhaps I have a misunderstanding with the term "relative path". I mean the path information using the drive letter of a mapped drive. "X:abcxyzbbbb.tif" which word translates automatic to an absolute path "serveryxyzshareabcxyzbbbb.tif"

And while rereading the thread, I realized that I made a mistake in my first post:
We are using INCLUDEPICTURE not LINK fields. <img src=/S/sorry.gif border=0 alt=sorry width=15 height=15> Sorry I do not know, what I was thinking...

But still the phenomena remains. I checked all Tools/Options and all Autoformating flags, but couldn't identify anything related to my problem.

    Hi hedgehog,

If, as you say, you've using an INCLUDEPICTURE field with a path like "X:abcxyzbbbb.tif", that is already an absolute path. What you seem to be getting with the drive mapping is a UNC path conversion (I think), but it's no more or less absolute than the original.

My comments about LINK fields apply equally to INCLUDEPICTURE and INCLUDETEXT fields.

    Hi macropod

Sorry for the confusion. It was a busy day, when I wrote my first post. I assumed that all fields containing a path behave more or less the same, but was not aware, that a mapped drive is an absolute path as well.

Do you have any ideas, if a prevention of the conversion from one absolute path type to another can be prevented?

    Regards,

    Hi hedgehog,

I don't know of any way of controlling that behaviour (haven't seen it myself). And I suspect that if anyone else did they'd have chimed in by now. Even so, unless you're changing the location of the source files, or you're moving the target to a PC with different mapping, I wouldn't have thought it mattered. If either of those is an issue for you, then the best I can suggest is using the utility I mentioned previously for updating the paths.
