Web page link to template (Word 2002)

Does anyone know if it is possible to hyperlink to Word templates from a Web page? We would like to make it easy for employees to create documents using templates. We thought that since some of our templates are use rarely by some employees, rather than having all the templates in the Workgroup Templates folder, we would just link them to our Intranet page. When we link a template, Word starts but opens the template rather than a document based on the template. We thought this would be easy, but have not found anyone who knows how this is done.

I've been told that you can write code to do this, but everything that we have tried opens the template not a document based on the template.

    Help please.

One solution that has been suggested here recently is to create a shortcut (.LNK type, not .URL type) to the template on the server and link to the shortcut.

A code solution could be to Shell "winword.exe /ttemplatename" (e.g., using Windows Script Host) but allowing access to the shell and direct paths to the server could violate security restrictions for your site. Difficult problem.

Long ago I posted some specific code, but I'm not sure I've retained a copy of it anywhere.

    Thanks for the ideas.

I don't know what the .LNK type of shortcut is. I'll check with our web designer to see if he knows.

I found the shell code through Microsoft's Knowledge Base. We'll give that one a try.

If you or anyone else finds the specific code solution, I would be interested in that also.

    Thanks again.

This is the link to the earlier thread about creating a shortcut and linking to that.

    Thanks, Andrew.

We are going to try the .lnk shortcuts.
