    System Mechanic 4

Since this is an oft-mentioned utility here in The Lounge, I've been using a trial copy of System Mechanic. When I got around to making the official purchase the other day, I discovered I bought version 4.0 instead of the 3.x I had been trying on for size. In parallel with this adventure, I discovered one morning that there is a new directory on EACH of my six partitions on this machine - INCINERATE. I started to panic, but quickly discovered that the directories had been created by System Mechanic, in case I decide to use their secure file deletion feature (see attachment). Since I hadn't stumbled on that feature in my trial, I don't know if it's new or was already present in the 3.x versions.

    HI Big Al,

Yes, It's in the 3.x versions, in the Files>securely delete files & folders section, where you can enable this feature.

It seems to me, that I enabled that in one of the earlier versions and I had some sort of problem with it, so I removed it. ( I don't recall just WHAT the problem was ) I think it was that it was just a space hog and seemed to be kind of redundant, so I never tried it in later versions.

Well, I've been wondering what the heck "Incinerate" was and how it got there and now I know! Thanks Al!

Also Al, I have been thinking about purchasing it, so if you could post back here with your findings it would be great. I do not remember a "system snapshot" in 3x version.

    Hi Big Al,

As you know, I have been a loyal fan of System Mechanic 3x, for some time now, I DL V4.0 and did some trials, between the two,
So far, the results are mixed, to my mind anyway.

One Annoying thing is that I haven't been able to adjust the full screen size, so that the right hand part isn't OFF screen. The scan now and other action boxes are barely visable and I have to guess where to click them. And the bottom part of the window is also off screen, so I can't see the results of the scan.
Do you have this problem or were you able to correct it?

The verdict is still out regarding reg file safety, too. I think I just have to mess around with it more before I go with V4.0 <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15>

    Re: System Mechanic 4

I must admit to both you and Mike that I bought Version 4 without even realizing what I was doing. I haven't had time to fool with the program much at all. I just had the trial version 3.x that was about to expire, so I went ahead and paid up. It might be awhile before I have more time to "play."
