blasted pop-up messages at my website

My website has recently started showing the following message when I have not made any changes to the pages on which this occurs. I would appreciate so much an explanation why this happens and what I do.

That's a javascript error. You can view the source of your page to see why it's happening. The messagebox indicates that the error is at line 180, so you should use a text editor that displays line numbers.

If you're sure that nothing has changed on your page, it's possible that the error was happening all along, but your browser was hiding it from you. Perhaps you started seeing the error after changing your browser setting to show errors...

It's also possible that the error is in script code that Geocities installs into your page automatically. If so, complain big time!

I wish I knew how to change the server to hide/show errors! And I have searched all over yahoo.com and cannot find a way to contact them. This looks like a good reason to move my data!

The option to display error information and/or enable the de###### is in IE under Tools>Internet Options...>Advanced.

Why not do this: refresh the page, click Yes to debug, and make a note of the highlighted line. Then, from the Debug menu I think, choose Detach all processes, close the de######, return to IE and then disable the de######. At least then we will know which line is causing the problem. Otherwise... well... I think it best to try to fix these things. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Don't forget that other users may still see the error if they have not disabled the error feature on their browsers.

Also, notice that you'll still see a yellow exclamation point appear at the bottom-left corner of your browser indicating there's an error in the document, despite the fact that you've disabled the error popup.

Bottom line - it will be better to actually fix the error than to ignore it.

I didn't even think of that! Thank you. We'll see if they bother to fix it. This is gobbledygook found on one of my webpages. I have not the slightest inkling what it is for! <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

If you would like a hand in fixing this, please post the URL of the page where the problem is happening.

If, in fact, it is caused by auto-generated code we'll be able to spot it for you.

This is the URL for the location of one of the script errors; it's at the bottom of the page:

Re: blasted pop-up messages at my website

I'm clicking the link you posted and I don't get any error!

I've tested with IE 6, Netscape 7, and Mozilla 1.3.

Is the error happening for you on one of the other linked pages? If you're getting the error and I'm not (on the same page), you may try flushing your browser cache:
Tools | Internet Options, Click "Delete Files..."

Sometimes that will purge bad .JS files and fix issues.

Arrrrgggg! Computers have a way of making me look like the fool. Perhaps the webmaster corrected the problem? All these years my website has been at that location and now "javascript" is being put on the pages. I don't know why. Thank you for your help. If it occurs again, I'll holler!

Re: blasted pop-up messages at my website

The Javascript is added for the Geocities advertisements (if not more). I'm sure it's standard for all non-paying geocities accounts to have these ads.

It's possible that the .JS file became corrupted during a download and was not corrected until you cleared your browser cache... Just a thought...

    Glad it's working now.

Re: blasted pop-up messages at my website

Two things that I find interesting:
    1) This error does not occur for me
    2) I looked at your source code, the indicated line (182) is part of the server-generated code.

Therefore, as Jefferson mentioned earlier, I would mention this to Geocities. There is probably something odd on their end.
