The "Windows98 OEM" one should do the job. Download the file (boot98.exe), put a blank floppy in your A-drive and double-click boot98.exe.
You should be able to run
Format c:
from it, which will wipe everything from the drive.

Reinstalling XP... (home)

I have a friend who for whatever reason wants to reinstall XP to remove a bunch of messed up registry errors(?). Anyway..he is using a site to instruct him on this that said:
" There is some evidence however that the XP installer program does not wipe the drive completely. If you really want to make sure the drive is scrubbed, then get a copy of a Windows 98 boot disk from bootdisk.com and pop the disk into your computer. Restart it."
His question is, What bootdisk should he use? The linked site is here: http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
Thanks for the help with this.

Victoria--

Was it "bootdisc" or some other site that claimed XP didn't format adequately? I'd be interested to see their "some evidence."

I wasn't challenging that this might be true--I was wanting to see it. I was pretty impressed by a presentation of a project that MIT graduate students have going where they recovered data from so-called US government intelligence agency wiping of the hard drive x amount of times, and recruit damaged so-called erased hard drives, collect them, and even restore substantial key information from the edges of hard drives, wiping out a lot of conventional wisdom that we are all brainwashed with.

Victoria, If your friend is just trying to clean up an installation gone bad, a re-install selecting format the disk when offered the chance will do fine. The XP installer program offers the opportunity to format the partition in which XP will be installed. I've never had a problem with the format leaving stuff behind. If security is the issue then scrubbing is the only way to go and very time consuming. He/she can just boot from the XP cd to start the install. Also, remember that any programs will have to be re-installed and any data in that partition will be lost. Perhaps, investigating registry repair programs is a better alternative.

SMBP: I know your curiousity. Sorry I couldn't give you more info than that. I will read your links when I get a minute. Thank you for those.

Joe: I think he messed up large somehow. I don't think registry repair programs would be a good thing as far as he is concerned. It sounded like it had something to do with trying to remove Nortons. He was to vague in his Email to garner much from it... I haven't heard from him since I sent him the info. from here. Thats a good thing I'm thinking. Hopefully all is good with the reinstall..
Thanks again to everyone.

See ya guys.
