Newsgroups (I use OE) [WinXP Pro] (v6.0)

I don't know if I'm supposed to post this here so apologies if I'm not.

My problem is accessing the CURRENT posts on newsgroups. I have this NG that I hadn't used for months - I posted a message the other day, but when I connected to the NG to see if I'd received any replies, I got thousands of back posts all the way back to when I last used the NG. I downloaded these, (thankfully I've got Broadband!), marked them all as read, logged off, and tried to d/load new messages, but all I'm getting is even older messages! It just won't go forwards. Anyone know what's happening?

    Mike,

Go to OE>tools>message rules>news and review what, If any rules you have set there. You can set to delete or mark as read, any over 3 days or whatever time frame you want to use. <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>

What news server? If it's Microsoft's msnews server, they had problems yesterday which could account for your problems.

if you visit newsgroups infrequently, you should set it to get a specific number of posts - default is 300, i prefer 1000. See Tools, Options...

Also - you can use google to find your post and see if there are replies.

    Mike--

First thing I'd do, and you've probably done this, is to go to Tools>Options>Maintenance Tab.> For help with those settings see:

    Kickstarting Outlook Express for Newsgroups

I'd like to thank the developer and product manager for OE6 who configured the question mark "?" to repeat precisely the lable for each checkbox making it a completely worthless item.
    __________________________________________________ _____________________________

You may want to pay attention to the "Purge Deleted Messages when leaving IMAP folders":

See: Jolene Morris.com Info Series on OE: Jolene recommends:

    Maintenance Tab

Remove the check by Delete news messages ____ days after downloading
Remove the check by Delete read message bodies in newsgroups
Check the box by Purge deleted messages when leaving IMAP folders
Check the box by Compact messages in the background

    __________________________________________________ _____________________________

It seems somehow you're storage setting for NG messages got changed--it wouldn't surprise me if even 3rd party software somehow impacted this--there have been several interactions with OE and 3rd party in other issues including ZA and NAV. The root storage folder could possibly have become corrupt--updating to OE6SP1 (google for it is quickest) and running System File Checker by putting "sfc/ purge cache" --a few seconds and "sfc/ scannow" in the run box or dos prompt may fix this. I'm linking you to Tom Koch's article on Newsgroup storage at his valuable site Tomsterdam: To determine the location of your store, click Tools| Options| Maintenance| Store folder. You may want to search Tom's site for "Newsgroup storage" because there are other articles on it I didn't link. I often recommend updating SP1 for issues that people post here and I often never get a response or followup even when I explicitly paste/link that OESP1 directly fixes their problem. My guess is that they ignore OESP1 with the ethos "Hotfixes are poison to my computer." I'm pasting Tom's comment here:

October 2002, Cumulative Update for Outlook Express 6.0 SP1

Update: OE with Service Pack 1 now has a working DEL key in newsgroups:

"Update: OE with Service Pack 1 now has a working DEL key in newsgroups.
To delete a news message/header from your local file, just press the DEL key. This works only in newsgroups, not in Advanced Find windows. It does not delete the message from the server, only from your local file. If you delete many messages at a time, be sure to compact the folder afterwards. If you want to retrieve a deleted news message, you will have to reset the newsgroup and download again.

This new feature works much faster than message rules or Advanced Find. You can now do maintenance of your news folders very simply. Try using a custom view (View | Current View | Define Views) to display only messages 2 weeks old, for example. Apply the view, select all (Edit | Select All), then press DEL. If you delete many messages at a time, be sure to compact the folder afterwards."

    Mary J--

Google is a good idea for so many reasons because it archives not only MSN but many newsgroups, and you can parse google and get better results by manipulating your search phrase--another google trick I don't use enough is that I'll hit "the Google images tab" for my software subject and for whatever reason a good screenshot will sometimes be a sign of a good site I might not get the usual way.

Ctrl+h with OE6SP1 will go directly to your posts in red and hitting the keys again will go to the regular downloaded headers.

I'd really be interested from anyone who might understand these options better than I do--how do you prefer to set those other checkboxes on the Newsgroup Maintenance tab, particularly the

It seems to work fine for me but I haven't really understood the impact of these as well as I should especially the first one on "IMAP folders."

Re: Newsgroups (I use OE) [WinXP Pro] (v6.0)

*Purge deleted messages when leaving messages when leaving IMAP folders
This deletes deleted IMAP messages from the server automatically. Use if it you use IMAP - I'm not aware of problems with it and you need to purge to remove the IMAP messages from the server or you could hit a mailbox limit.

*Empty messages from the 'Deleted items' folder on exit
This empties OE's local deleted folder. Use it if you want automated deletion.

    *Compact messages in the background
Avoid this setting. Bad deal... can cause file corruption.

*Delete read message bodies in newsgroups
This gets rid of read message bodies. AFAIK, it's safe to use but if you want ot re-read the message, you'll need to download it again. i would use it only if disk space is a problem.

*Compact messages when there is x% wasted space
Autcompacting is bad news - do this yourself every few weeks.

When news access gets slow I run some rules now to delete older messages, then i compact the files myself. I never have a problem with OE doing it this way.

Re: Newsgroups (I use OE) [WinXP Pro] (v6.0)

This is helpful--defines these better for me. When you say compact them yourself what actual steps do you take--often I update using Tools>Synchronize folder--particularly if I've been away from it for hours or longer and want to get new messages or replies--so isn't that redownloading?

I always have a little trouble understanding when people say "I check the messages on the server" and see if I want to download it" --they would mean by the title--or header--they say with IMAP 4 you can search through your messages for key words while still on the server; then choose which mesages to download to your machine. How does this take place? I mean they're off the server once you see those headers or titles aren't they?

When you delete older messages, do you just let the rule you set take care of this?

At the bottom of that Maintenance dialogue box on that tab is a "OE can save all messages to and from a server log file" --do you check that?

Do you ever go into the root store folder and manually do the deleting?

    Thanks,

    SMBP
