W2000: double-clicked document doesn't open

Conundrum: Win NT 4 (SP6a), plenty RAM, MHz, disk space, etc. Office 2000 SBE (SP1). All recently reformatted/re-installed. Word and Excel work fine when logged in as Admin. When logged in as User and you double-click on a document, the app BRIEFLY displays the Windows Installer screen (like, less than a second), shows the app splash screen, then the following error message,

Cannot find 'foo bar.doc' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available.

If the app happens to be running already, there is no problem, but if it's not then you get the error message. The app starts, but the document doesn't load.

Why does it work absolutely normally for Admin but not User? How can it be fixed? Detect and Repair made no diff.

ONE word document does actually work the way it's expect to, and it doesn't have a space in the document name (i.e. it conforms to 8.3 naming {except the path is called D:My Documents!}. It's bizarre!

Log on as the user and try re-registering Word. Go to Start/Run and run the following command:

winword /r

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.

As to why it works differently for different users: This information is stored in the Registry. I would say that each user has their own profile and therefore many of the Registry entries are unique to the logon.

In addition to what BAM has suggested, you might also do the following:
1. Open any Explorer window & choose View/Folder Options...(or options, depending on your OS)/File Types.
2. Scroll to Microsoft Word Document
3. Select Open & press Edit.

I checked my settings (which work) & you should see the following:
For Open, Under Application Used To Perform This Action, it should read:

C:MSOFFICEWINWORDWINWORD.EXE /n "%1"
although your path may differ. Use DDE should be checked. DDE message should read
[Fileopen("%1")]
Application should be Winword; Topic should be system.

For new files, besides application being Winword & Topic being system, the 2 lines should be:
C:MSOFFICEWINWORDWINWORD.EXE /n "%1"
& [FileNew("%1")]

In Word 2000, Vew/FolderOptions/File Types/Microsoft Word Document, click Edit/Open/Edit, Under Application Used To Perform This Action, it should read:

"c:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeWINWORD.EXE" /n

DDE should be checked & read:
[REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")]

For FileNew, it should read:

"c:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeWINWORD.EXE" /n

& for DDE, Under Application Used To Perform This Action, it should read:

[REM _DDE_Direct][FileNew("%1")]

Hope this helps.

Hi Phil,

FWIW, the /r (regserver) switch also rebuilds the file associations as you described.

Thanks for the info, BAM. So far I've been lucky & haven't had to reregister Word...but some day...
