Sampler, Create Music

Many years ago, with my old Atari, I used to have a couple of music creating programs, which I spent many a hour trying to create my own music.
The programs had such things as piano, guitar, flute, drums etc, and the user could add instruments, beats etc and just have some really good fun.

Does anyone know of an available program on a free download, just to mess about with.

A Google search for music freeware or something similar returns some 400,000 hits , many of which are lists of freeware programs. There are music editors, music generators, etc.

One program I found fun to use is Tangent, a random music generator from Paul Whalley. It produces a lot of nonsense and the occasional gem.

Thanks Hans
The download looks really interesting.
Demo's are a bit weird though

Tangent can be used to produce really weird "music", but with some fiddling it can produce pleasant things too. There are many other programs out there that create more conventional music. I once downloaded a program from a Japanese developer (I've forgotten the name) that produced an endless stream of muzak, perfect for the waiting room of a dentist. It didn't last long on my hard disk.
