All search engines redirected (XP,IE6)

Any search engine I try gets redirected to a page that says I have a malicious program and suggests how to fix it. This fix does not seem to work. It also has a link for Spybot. The link takes me to a page appearing to be cnet and offers a free download of Spybot. Unfortunately I am now gun shy and suspicious of the supposed fix. Does anyone know if I can trust this site or of any sure fix for this problem?

If you gave the exact messages it would assist. But if you're suspicious, stay suspicious!

You can get Spybot Search & Destroy from the preceding link (scroll down a bit).

Re: All search engines redirected (XP,IE6)

I tried the Spybot Search & Destroy with no luck. After further trying a google search it appears that this is where it started. There were instructions to follow this path-c:>windows>system32>drivers>etc>hosts. Then after opening hosts delete any line containing google.com or google.co.uk or the like. I however cannot open the file. The extension is not recognized. Any suggestions?

Hi David:
1. I've never heard of being forced to go to a page that would tell you that you have a malicious program. It sounds like your search engine has been hijacked, but I could be wrong. Could you post the link that you're redirected to. Just copy it, & paste it between the following: <!t><!/t>URL goes here<!t><!/t> or you can click the TagPanel & it will insert the bracketed portion for you.
2. I would go to <post#=296439>post 296439</post#> & follow the recommendations there.
3. The hosts file doesn't have an extension. What you might do is simply rename the hosts file to oldhosts. Then see if your search engines work. The advice to delete the lines containing Google sound like they are accurate, but I can't be sure.

Thanks for the suggestions John and Phil. I did change the name of the host file to oldhosts and that did solve the problem. I don't know if I still have a underlying cause I need to take care of or not but the suggestion worked, Thanks Phil.

I'm glad it worked. However, I would still go to the post that I cited & follow the recommendations. Something changed your hosts file, whether you did it accidentally or something else did it deliberately.
Cheers,

Hi djwarrior

I'd like to suggest you check out the Starpost link (anti Adware, Spyware, Hijack) at the top of the Lounge's Main Index page.
There you'll find some links for some free anti Hijack software.

Have a Great day!!!

That's 2 for one thread. What a way to use smilies! That's a great post though...sums it up nicely.
