    IE6 quits on one URL only (Win98SE, IE6 SP1 (fully patched to date))

    When I enter one particular URL - www.anglican.bm - IE6 just quits. There is no error or warning - it just goes away, ceases to exist! I feel like I have been ex-communicated! The result is the same if I use a website link to that URL. I am unable to create this effect with any other URL, all of which work fine. If I type www.anglican.com it is fine. If I type the URL of other .bm sites they are fine.

    There are no other apparent anomalies in running IE6. The URL is valid and is accessible from other PC's - it is one that I have often used but not recently so I cannot attribute the problem to any specific event. I can find no similar problems discussed in MS or Woody's and am at a loss! I have run Repair IE from Add/Remove Programs but no change.

    Anyone with any ideas please! <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>

    Hi Peter:
    When I go to that page, Avant Browser (which uses the IE engine), blocks the pop-up window. That's the way the site is set up. I know nothing about that site, but if you were to put it in your trusted security zone (Tools/Internet Options/Security & add it to your trusted sites, you probably won't have problems getting there. Strange that you should crash though.
    Hope this helps,

    Hi Phil,

    Thanks for responding, it's good to know there's someone out there.

    I tried your suggestion but unfortunately nothing has changed. Enter the URL and Boom! IE ceases to exist.

    Any other ideas?

    The contents of the page is:

    <html><head><title>ACB -- Anglican Church in Bermuda</title>
    <script>
    &lt;!--
    var WAS = screen.availWidth - 10;
    var ASH = screen.availHeight - 36;
    var DiM = ",type=fullWindow,top=0,left=0,width=" + WAS + ",height=" + ASH + ",scrollbars=no";
    function openNew()

    window.open("indez.html","ACB",DiM);
    window.blur();
    window.opener='';
    window.close();

    //--&gt;
    </script>
    </head>
    <body onLoad="openNew()"></body></html>

    Which appears to open a "pop-under" window with the interesting name "indez.html" -- if I read that correctly. That is not entirely necessary -- they could have just done that as a "Meta -Refresh" -- but they chose to script it.

    It sounds as if you have a scripting problem on your computer -- that MIGHT be solved by re-installing Windows Script -- don't know for sure.

    Until that time, use this link instead: http://www.anglican.bm/indez.html

    Thanks R2 for responding. Your diagnosis is interesting and the alternate link you gave does indeed solve the problem but I am out of my depth when you talk about reinstalling Windows Script. I have no idea how I would go about doing that. Can you direct me to this information or instruct me appropriately?

    Thanks again

    This is Windows Script. The application extensions (Dynamic Link Libraries) that are included in this are used by Internet Explorer to run Scripts on web pages.

    Peter, Are you running a popup blocker? I'm running the Google tool bar with its popup blocker and observed the same behavior you saw until I clicked on the link with the CTRL key depressed. Then the window opened. Since it is a pop under type windows a popup blocker would cause the behavior you see.

    Re: IE6 quits on one URL only (Win98SE, IE6 SP1 (fully patched to date))

    Thanks for the pop-up blocker tip Joe. I had the same problem as Peter re just two very common sites viz. www.whitepages.com.au and www.yellowpages.com.au

    I tried holding down the CTRL key while selecting the site but that instance of IE6 dies away as usual (another instance remained open).

    Checked IE6 security settings but couldn't detect anything untoward - not surprising as all other sites I access are OK.

    So turned off Tweak-XP pop up blocker and voila!.

    Must be the way the site is set up as Tweak-XP pop-up blocker says it will scane new instances of IE for known pop-up phrases or servers and if found, immediately close that instance of IE.

    I did look through the Tweak-XP list of such phrases/servers but couldn't see anything that obviously related to white or yellow pages. So I guess I'll have to put up with pop-ups.

    Thanks, Ken <img src=/S/flags/Australia.gif border=0 alt=Australia width=30 height=18>
