I need to find password to Word file (Unknown)

I am a teacher and I am involved in an active discussion on a teacher's discussion board. One of the other people on the board was talking about how he always uses Word's password feature to protect tests and other files from students who might have access to his computer. I know there is a lot of software out there to crack Word passwords and I told him so.

He sent me a file (attached) and challenged me to crack it. I was just going to go download a demo version of one of these programs and do that but all of the demo versions are very restrictive. (That actually makes sense. Generally, when you need such a program, you need it once. If the demo cracked your file, why would you buy it.)

Anyway, it's not a big deal but if anyone has a copy of such a program and has the time, I really would like to show this group Word files can be opened without the password. I just don't want to do so bad enough to spend $100 on the software.

The file in question is attached. He tells me it only contains a number and he wants me to report back the number.

    Thanks

I think it's only fair to ask him to pay for the software, too.

But seriously, it now is possible in more recent versions of Word/Windows to use such a long password that for all practical purposes, it cannot be broken by a single person with an ordinary computer. You could recruit a team of people to crack the SAT, of course, but mosts tests, assuming a sufficiently strong password, would be easier to just steal than to decrypt.

With regards to the protection of files like this, I don't think the Word password is a very good approach, for the kind of scenario described. If someone else has access to the computer, what's to prevent them spiriting a copy to floppy, then taking their own sweet time to break its security. If it's a test, the stucents might all be willing to chip in 5 bucks each to buy the cracking software .

I'd suggest something like ScramDisk or E4M to encrypt a mountable volume on the HD. The encryption used by these programs is very much stronger than those used by MS Office AFAIK. Look them up on Google - both are .

    hi Ronny.

i've got the impression he's pretty savvy. if he choses his wordfile password long and complicated enough the students will not gain access in a million years. several million years in fact, even with all their computers combined into one password cracking machine.
