Powerpoint XP Org Chart Tool Useless (XP)

I am using the Powerpoint Org Chart tool in Office XP and am ready to kill! First, I opened a Powerpoint presentation made with Office 97 and tried to edit an org chart. The boxes were shrunken, and the fonts converted to 1 point. When I tried to grow the fonts, the boxes stayed small.

I then tried building one from scratch, and it wasn't any better. The boxes and fonts end up too small, and most of the space of the chart is taken up with connector lines that from box to box are unnecessarily long. Somewhere between '97 and XP, this tool seems to have taken a turn for the worse. What gives?

Using the Org Chart toolbar you should be able to change the scale of the chart.
You can select individual boxes or the entire chart, then change the font and font size in the Formatting toolbar.

Thanks for the advice, but it look swlike there is more to it.

Here's what happens. When I double-click on the chart (from 97) to edit it, all the boxes get way smaller and the font goes to 2 points, and all the boxes go to the extreme right and left of the object's space with unnecessarily long lines connecting the tiny boxes. If I select either one box or all of them and take the font up to something like Arial 8, I end up with text that dwarfs a bunch of tiny boxes. FYI, the chart was of the "both hanging" layout.

With further experimenting, I may have found a way to fool Org chart into doing what I want. I am having some success by upping the font, and then adding a number of blank lines above and below the words I want in the box. That seems to make Org chart make the box wider. I contend that it shouldn't be this hard!

I don't have a PowerPoint 97 sheet with an organization chart available to test, but I didn't have any problems creating an organization chart from scratch in a PowerPoint 2002 sheet.

It just got better. The chart got hosed in going from 97 to XP. "Autolayout was turned on. I turned off "autolayout" and was able to eventuallly do everything I wanted, making boxes a size of my choosing, moving them left and right, etc. Problem over.

I am now convinced that "autolayout" may be some spawn of the devil.

Thanks for caring.

Hi there, I have no problem editing an org chart made in PPT 97, using PPT 2000, maybe there are more differences between 2000 and the XP version of PPT you are using?

Re: Powerpoint XP Org Chart Tool Useless (XP)

I agree that "autolayout" in the new diagramming tool (introduced in PPT 2002 -- aka XP) is evil. Glad to hear you were able to figure out what's going on there. (Sorry, I was out of town at PPTLive, so I didn't see this issue posted until just today.)

Here are some KB articles -- just so you can see what's happening between the versions of Org Chart used in PPT 97/2000 and the diagramming tools in PPT 2002/2003. (BTW, Org Chart was pretty much unchanged between 97 and 2000, so in those articles below, where it mentions 2000, you can substitute 97 when you read...)

Thanks again to everyone. The last message summed it up. Just remember to run as far as you can from autolayout in 2002.

I appreciate everyone's help.
