    IE6 - Office 2002 SP2 Help (6.0.2800.1106,xpsp2.030422-1633)

Not sure if this is an IE6 problem or an Office 2002 SP2 Help System problem, but as the error message refers to Internet Explorer, so here goes:

Within Office I access the Help System - fine, but if I click on underlined text to link me to an explanation or example or whatever, I get the attached error message. The referenced file/URL appears to be present in the referenced folder.

Anyone got any idea what is causing the script error, and more importantly, how to fix it.

The problem occurs with all Office Applications.

Incidentally, running Windows XP Pro Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633

These are internal errors in the help files, there is nothing you can do about them, but you can avoid these irritating error messages. In Internet Explorer, select Tools | Internet Options..., activate the Advanced tab and uncheck"Display a notification about every script error." and check "Disable Script Debugging", then click OK.

There is not much you are going to do about these errors, unless you are willing to recreate all those .chm files. I repeat my recommendation to turn off notification of script errors and to disable script debugging.

Could you trim your screen shot? It is extremely wide and causes the Lounge window to scroll; only the left part is relevant.

    Hi Hans,

Thanks for the feedback, albeit a confirmation of the continuing unhelpfulness of Microsoft.

I've been doing a bit more searching and on trying to debug the Office Help came up with the attached information from the De######. Can anyone shed any more light on this topic, or how to fix or get around it. I've tried the Office Repair function from the original genuine instal disk - not improvement.

This unhelpful HELP is driving me nuts as I'm trying to learn how to use Excel more effectively.

    Screen shot trimmed as suggested.

Recreating the *.chm files sounds like what I need to do, as doing the Office Repair bit hasn't solved the problem.

(I should also note here that I have a problem with the Windows XP Help system - clicking on "Related Topics" adds a new "notes" icon place holder but takes me nowhere.)

So, how does one go about recreating the *.chm files.

    Thanks for your input Hans.

    Thanks for trimming the screenshot.

I don't know whether .chm files can be edited, since they are compiled HTML files; I have no experience in this area. Perhaps somebody else knows if and how. If you don't get a reply here within a reasonable amount of time, you might ask a question about editing .chm files in the Web Design, Coding and Scripting forum.

We had a thread around here somewhere a while back where we figured out how to uncompress all the HTML files out of the CHM and confirm the existence of the error. I don't recall anyone trying to put it back together again... you'd probably need at least Microsoft's HTML Help Workshop (I think that's the name).

Problem solved courtesy of Woody's Windows Watch #6.22

It seems the problems I was having were related to a Microsoft Critical Update and other updates, or something like that.

But WWW #6.22 gave me the clue. I checked whether I had installed the updated Help Control referred to in Knowledge Base article 811630 - I found I had, but had also, as I always do, updated with all the subsequent updates. OK me'thinks, let's download that update again and re-install it.

    Voila!

All appears to be fixed - the problem with Excel Help, the problem I was having with Windows XP Help.

Now I'm wondering what's broken as a result of my re-installing this Critical Update out of sequence. Guess I'll find out in time.

Thanks to those who assisted - especially to Woody for his timely mention of that old update that I'd originally installed back in early February 2003.
