Task Pane Appears and Then Disappears (Excel XP)

    Hi,
"Task Pane Appears and Then Disappears When You Start Excel".

This problem just started. I went to MS's Knowledge base and it said that Excel was starting a file in the Xlstart folder.
I looked but there was nothing there.
I double checked that I still had it checked off to startup under the Tools/Options/View and it was.
I looked to be sure no files were starting up under Tool/Options/General and there wasn't.

Can anyone tell me what could have caused this? and how I can fix it?

    Thanks!
    Louise

There is a registry fix that is supposed to cure the disappearance of the task pane when starting Excel.

    1. From the Start button, choose Run...
    2. Type regedit then click OK or press Enter.
    3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, Software, Microsoft, Office, 10.0, Common, General.
    4. With General selected, select Edit | New | DWORD Value.
    5. Change the name of the new value to: DoNotDismissFileNewTaskPane
    6. Press Enter to complete the renaming.
    7. Select Edit | Modify.
    8. Enter 1 as the value and click OK.
    9. Close the Registry Editor.

    Hi Hans!
Well that worked! Thank you very much!

Now, do you have a fix to also close the standard "Book1" when I open a file? That used to work too but doesn't anymore. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
It looks like I'm headed for a reformat and reinstall pretty soon.

    Thanks!

    I don't have a solution, but I do have a question:

In Excel, select Tools | Add-ins... Are one or more add-ins checked? If so, which ones?

    I have 5 Add-Ins checked.

    Analysis ToolPak
    Analysis TookPak - VBA
    Conditional Sum Wizard
    Macro Systems Add-ins Manager
    The Spreadsheet Assistant

Re: Task Pane Appears and Then Disappears (Excel XP)

The first three are standard Microsoft add-ins, but the other two are custom add-ins. Try the following:

    1. Select Tools | Add-ins...
    2. Uncheck the Macro Systems Add-ins Manager and The Spreadsheet Assistant (or even all checked add-ins)
    3. Click OK.
    4. Quit and restart Excel.
    5. Open an existing workbook.

Does the blank workbook Book1 get closed now? If so, one of the add-ins is the culprit. You can re-activate them one by one to find out exactly which one it is. There is nothing you can do about it yourself, but you might contact the makers of the offending add-in to see if they have a fix or an updated version.

Hans, Once again you hit it right on the head.
The culprit was The Spreadsheet Assistant. I'm really quite surprised since I bought it a few years ago and it has never given me any trouble. I suspect that I may have some corrupted files somewhere. My computer overall has been acting strangely lately even though my anti-virus software tells me that I don't have any viruses.

Well, like I said earlier, it looks like a reformat is scheduled for the near future.

    Thanks again.

I don't know whether the developers of The Spreadsheet Assistant are to blame, or Microsoft, or both. It is quite possible that Excel 2002 interacts slightly differently with add-ins than previous versions.

For the moment, you will have to decide for yourself if you prefer to reactivate the Spreadsheet Assistant and live with the fact that Book1 isn't closed when it should be, or leave the Spreadsheet Assistant deactivated. This problem by itself doesn't seem important enough to warrant a reformat, but you wrote that you have other problems with your computer.

Re: Task Pane Appears and Then Disappears (Excel XP)

You're quite right. I can live with that. However, it's not just that. I've had large quantities of my files disappear, email address books disappear, programs that just don't work like they used to, to name just a few. This all happenned after I used Windows XP's System Restore. It didn't restore, it wiped. Never again. Luckily I had most of my files on CDs but not all. I still haven't had time to check every folder to find how much is really gone.

In any case, thanks Hans for your answers.

Re: Task Pane Appears and Then Disappears (Excel X

I only have XL 97 so maybe I'm misunderstanding you but can you not add /e to the command line that starts XL so that XL opens without the std blank Book1 in the first place?

Re: Task Pane Appears and Then Disappears (Excel X

I don't think that is what Louise wants.

If you start Excel, it creates a new blank workbook Book1. If you don't modify anything in Book1, and open an existing workbook, standard behaviour is to close Book1 silently, since it is assumed that you had no use for the blank workbook. In most circumstances this is desirable: if you want to work with a blank workbook, it is available when you open Excel, and if you want to open an existing workbook, you don't have to close the superfluous blank workbook yourself.

But some add-ins cause Excel 2002 NOT to close the blank workbook if you open an existing one. It's a minor annoyance.
