    Office 2003 Developer (XP / Sp2)

    Is there an equivalent to Office XP Developer for Office 2003 <img src=/S/question.gif border=0 alt=question width=15 height=15>
    - I've been looking at the Microsoft site and all I can find in the "developer" line is the Visual Studio add-in

That's the way it will be for Office2003, there no longer will be a Developer Edition. I'm been trying to find out the cost is of the Visual Studio Tools (which includes Access runtime), but haven't had any luck.

    Hi Mark,
Based on this it looks like it will be around 450 USD. A fair bit more than the increment to buy Office developer, but I suppose you are getting more.

What's frustrating is that I can't find out anything about pricing or upgrades from the Microsoft site! Perhaps there is special upgrade pricing for current Developer Edition users?

I don't have an answer to that, Mark. There will probably be an upgrade price for VS 2003, but since the Access tools are an add-in for that, I haven't been able to sort it out either. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

It's all very frustrating. Kind of puts a crimp in our ability to plan.

If you haven't already done so, there is an article in Pinnacle Publishing, Smart Access, October 2003, "Packaging Access 2003 Solutions" that may confirm and/or give you more information.

    Argh, the link is behind their subscription, so non-subscribers can't see it <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>

You can see the overview of the tools here: http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/ed...s/accessdav.asp. Unfortunately, it doesn't answer the questions about upgrade paths or prices. <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>

    Thanks for the pointer Charlotte
    - the package wizard, wonder how it compares to the Sage install scripts <img src=/S/question.gif border=0 alt=question width=15 height=15>
    - the property scanner looks like half of the excellent Find & Replace at http://www.rickworld.com/products.html
    - custom startup wizard looks nice

    Re: Office 2003 Developer (XP / Sp2)

If the packaging wizard is a linear descendant of the setup wizard, stick with a third party installer and SageKey scripts, they're worth the cost. For light weight packaging where the target machine is running the same operating system and doesn't have any peculiarities of hardware or software, the wizard will probably be fine. If your target is hundreds or thousands of miles away and you have no idea what version of OS they may be running or what kind of peripherals they have, stick with the 3rd party stuff. The setup/packaging wizard has always been lightweight and I can't think of any reason why they might have changed that since it's a giveaway with the rest of the tools.

Seems like good advice to me Charlotte

You need either the Wise Installer or InstallShield for the installer. SageKey provides you with a script to control the installer. They are very responsive and their support is excellent, but someone in your own organization is going to have to become familiar with the SageKey script so they can tweak it as necessary.
