Interrupted Boot

Windows 98 SE working fine on an HP Pavillion. Problems that appeared to start with an older 'electronic card' have been repaired except that everytime the machine boots I have to make the choice from the numbered list of Normal, Safe etc.
Appreciate the help!

Two things...

Electric Card - is this the power thing on the motherboard

Usually, when you get that list, it means something happened when the machine was shut downm...

She received an 'electronic card' from a friend via email and on opening it appears to have changed the driver for the printer and for the video display.
Now it starts successfully every time - display and printer fixed. But it always starts with the multi-choice, not with Safe highlighted, but with the list and a prompt to choose a number.

This happened to a customer of mine also. They think it happened after they got hit by the kak virus. I have tried all the MS KB suggestions regarding the MSDOS.SYS file with no luck. KB also mentions the possibility of a winboot.ini file (hidden) that might have gotten left behind on an install. None were found. Hopefully someone will know what happened and how to fix it.

does it run down a timer or hold for a key press? what did you have before the problem began?

In the case of my customer's machine it is set for normal start and a 25 second (as I recall) timer that counts down and then continues into Windows. Prior to this it just went straight into Windows.

Looks like a "BOOT.ini" file has been added. This is used to 'Dual Boot' and allow one to select the different OS's.
Check at C:/ (root) for this file, in may be hidden. If found rename it, and reboot, it should now go straight into Windows.

Make Sure that they have NOT added any other OS's or any software that requires a diffferent Windows Configuration. This is how some DOS games are run under Windows.

did it display a splash screen or what before? i think the boot is the same but the splash screen is gone. i had my win98 machines set to display that because i could never remember which function key to hit to get the boot menu [img]/w3timages/icons/smile.gif[/img]

Both suggestions are good ideas. I'll check the machine for both. BTW, what is the splash screen file name and where is it found? Thanks

It originally displayed the Win98 splash screen. I checked for the logow.sys file and it is there. I also checked and there are no boot.ini or winboot.ini files. The settings in the msdos.sys are ok and in msconfig Advanced, the Enable start menu is unchecked.

Any other ideas?

This isn't a major problem, just annoying.

It will allow you to easily change all the boot-up settings for menu, splash screen, etc. It will also permit you to restore "Factory settings", although I"ve never been brave enough to try that.
