Which font are you using in Word?

If you select Insert | Symbol..., and then select the Currency Symbols subset, do you see the Euro symbol? If not, try selecting another font.

    Re: Euro (Word 2000)

    Hans, bedankt.
We're using the standard fonts like Arial and Times New Roman. Installed from scratch.
I'm using the left Alt and the 5 on a new PC.
Again: notepad yes, Word no euro. I should say: nothing to do with fonts since they are all the same for winapps, aren't they?

    Re: Euro (Word 2000)

The shortcut key combinations for the Euro are Ctrl+Alt+5 (with 5 on the main keyboard) and Ctrl+Alt+E. You might check if either of these shortcuts has been reassigned in Word:
    - Select Tools | Customize...
    - Click Keyboard...
    - Click in the box labeled "Press new shortcut key"
    - Press Ctrl+Alt+5 and look at "Currently assigned to". On my system, it says [unassigned]
    - Clear the "Press new shortcut key" box by pressing backspace
    - Press Ctrl+Alt+E and look at "Currently assigned to". On my system, it says

I suspect that the shortcut key combination may vary for different regional settings.

I have all my settings set to English - UK and the shortcut combination for the

    Re: Euro (Word 2000)

Hans, it has nothing to do with shortcuts. They work fine in Notepad.
It's just Word that shows the square with or without shortcuts.
Even when inserting the Euro through Symbols (and the sign shows up from there!) in the document is the square again.

    Re: Euro (Word 2000)

I'm sorry, I have no idea. Everything I can find about this problem points to either using the wrong shortcut or using the wrong font, both of which are ruled out in your situation.

    Re: Euro (Word 2000)

I think Hans is correct. The keyboard shortcut to generate the euro symbol differs according to the country. (Oh, and I wonder who that chap is who's credited at the end of the web page referenced?!).

If the font includes the euro symbol, it will either be at its Unicode address, U+20AC, or (via a 'bodge') in the Extended ASCII character set at the (previous)

    Re: Euro (Word 2000)

The first PC is solved: they downloaded old fonts from the internet. The old PC's had the new fonts with Euro! The new one old fonts! I transferred the fonts from the oldies to the new one and the problem was solved. Thanx for thinking with me.
But, the other one, at an other place, still has this weird problem. I'm going to check it once more. Will let you know.

    Re: Euro (Word 2000)

But if the new PC had old fonts, how come it could display the Euro symbol correctly in Excel and Notepad? I would guess it's either present or it isn't...

    Hans,
Quite right, I was already wondering if anyone would note that! It was the user that stated that, because, he said, this was true on the other computer as well. Seemed he didn't really check that. Sorry about that. I'll let you know if anything turns up on the other PC.

    Re: Euro (Word 2000)

We had this problem and finally solved it by going to the following site and downloading the euro symbol.

    http://www.hp.com/pond/euro/indexes/...ree_fonts.html

You get an .exe file that downloads and leads you through installing the symbol for Word.

    Hope this helps

    Re: Euro (Word 2000)

Sorry JBULLS, that doesn't help. Switching back to your font after using the Euro-sign, takes to much time.
I already made a little macro to do this, but I would like to have it solved permanently.
