My Computer

In My computer, I wish to see a list of files while viewing Drive C. Can you tell me how to have the "list" view always appear by default when I open a file? Thanks

I'm confused. What has list view to do with opening a file?

If you mean that you want all folders to be shown in List View, modify the view of a folder until you're satisfied, then select Tools | Options..., activate the View tab and click the button to apply this view to all folders.

Use Windows Explorer instead. That defaults to a file tree view.

Go to this post to see how to adjust the tree view to open to the folder you want as your default.

In Windows XP, there's a Folders button on the toolbar that will show or hide the folder list pane. Not sure when this was added to My Computer (it could be new in XP).

Neat trick Jefferson !!! That's EXACTLY the same view as the one I've got Windows Explorer set to default to when it opens. I used the information in the previously referenced post to set it up. What will Micro$oft think of next ????? An OS that doesn't require patches ?????

Naahhh !!!

Re: My Computer

In fact, "My Computer" and "Windows Explorer" have been two different aspects of the same application Explorer.exe since Windows 95 / Windows NT 4. In a shortcut to Explorer.exe, you could specify which view was displayed by adding or omitting the /e switch.
In Windows XP, other views were added. They are available through View | Explorer Bar.

Hans,

The more I think I know about Windows, the more I find out how little I really know !!!
