Preparing to delete (XP PRo (SP1))

Sometimes it seems that Windows XP just chokes when I ask it to delete a root folder with a lot of branches. The delete indicator shows the message "Preparing to delete" and then it takes ages before it starts deleting. It's faster to delete individual folders by hand. Is there any setting I can change to encourage Windows to delete more quickly? The same goes for copying folders from one drive to another. Whenever I see the message, "Preparing to Copy" I know I'm in for a long wait.

    Thanks,

    Chris (Hunt)

I haven't studied the recycle bin in detail, but perhaps "Preparing to delete" involves calculating how much space you have allocated for it and clearing space for the big hunk of new files?
