Word crashes after closing document 2

If from the start menu, I open a new Office Document, select a Word document, save it, then close it, then open a new document (document 2), then try and save document 2, Word crashs (Winword has performed and illegal operation). This happens with nothing else running except what is started after a reboot. What could be causing this conflict?

    Hi Jim,

Sounds like a "rogue" temp file.

Word creates about 15 different temp files for various purposes. Of course these are normally deleted when Word is "finished" with them, but if your computer hangs while Word is running they can be left behind.

If Word runs into a temp file with the same name it is trying to create then you run problems such as the one you described.

Go to Start/Find/Files or Folders and search for all *.tmp and ~$*.do? files and delete those you find and see if that takes care of it.

    Jim:

Just to add to BAM's advice, make sure you close Word (and any other running application) before deleting the temp files. Also, it won't hurt to delete all ~*.* files. You should do this [deleting] on a regular basis, even though rebooting may often take care of temp files. But especially do this after any crash, AFTER you've checked to make sure you still haven't lost your data.

    Hi Phil and Jim,

You can run into problems deleting all ~*.* files. It's too wide of a search string. There are some programs, PaperPort immediately comes to mind, that use a tilde as the first letter of permanent file names. (Yes I agree they should be shot!)

All Word temp files will use one of the following search strings:
    *.tmp
    ~$*.do?
    ~*.wbk
and if you modified the extension for your backup files then you would search for those accordingly.

My favourite trick is to create a shortcut to the temp folder on the desktop, and regularly do a ctrl+a, shift+delete

    Hi Crudd:
A good idea. But Word can also leave temp files in other folders.
