Document reverts to ReadOnly after first save (2002 SP-2)

I have been working on a document at work for several days without any problems. At work I have Windows XP and Word 2002 with service pack 2. Word is setup to always save the document in Word 97 format.
Yesterday I took my document home and worked on it at home. At home I have Windows 98 SE and Word 2000.

When I brought my document back into work today it changes to ReadOnly after I have saved it for the first time. That is, I open the document and work on it (document is not ReadOnly). Then I save the document. This is successful, but then the document changes to ReadOnly.

Has anybody seen or heard of this before? More to the point, does anybody know how to stop it from happening?

    Have fun,

    Mykey

That is very odd. Do you have any document management software plugged into Word that alters its Save or SaveAs commands?

Did you use Outlook 2002 to get the file home/back and/or did Word ask if you wanted to merge changes when you opened the edited document?

I assume you are saving in a folder where you have "change" or "modify" privileges (not just "write" or "add" privileges)... hmmm.

The next time you save, check the Tool>Options...> dialog's Save tab for any passwords or other odd settings. (I don't really think you'll find the answer there, but just for the record. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>)

I'm not sure, but 3 other things to think about.

    1. Are you taking the files back & forth on a CD? This can make them read-only.
    2. Is it possible that you have temp files left at work & that the first time you try to save, Word finds the file in use & so makes it read-only? If you've crashed Word before & not cleaned up the temp files, you should do so. See <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>, Step 1 for instructions how to do so.
    3. Are you sure that you're working on the same file? It's possible that you've saved the same file in 2 locations on your hard drive, although I don't know why that would cause the current file to change attributes?
    Cheers,

Re: Document reverts to ReadOnly after first save (2002 SP-2)

Thanks for the replies. Here are the answers:

    No document management software installed.
A colleague e-mailed my document to me at home as an attachment using Outlook 2002. I brought it back to work using a Compact Flash card. Word didn't ask me if I wanted to merge.
I do have all the privileges I need on the directory and the document. Although the directory had the ReadOnly flag "half ticked". I had previous checked that the document wasn't ReadOnly. Anyway, I've unchecked the ReadOnly permission on the directory and applied the changes to all sub-folders and files.
I checked for temp files and there aren't any. Word didn't give me any auto-recover option either.

Anyway. I'll try it again today and see if it still happening. By the way, after I posted I realised that it didn't always happen after the first save. On one occasion I left my computer for a while and when I came back, the document had changed to ReadOnly. You are about to enter the twilight zone.....

    Have fun,

    Mykey

    Brief update:

Checked options and can find no strange things that may cause this to happen.
First time I saved the document this morning it changed to ReadOnly.

    Have fun,

    Mykey.

Well, that is strange. I would check:
    1. For viruses--although that would be a strange payload.
    2. I'd go through all the steps in <post#=197827>post 197827</post#> & see if there's an add-in or some other corrupt file or strange setting. I'd certainly be curious to know if the behavior still existed if you started Word from the command line with winword.exe /a, as mentioned in the above link.
