Files in FIle|New dialog (Word 2000/SR1)

What we are trying to figure out is how Word takes different templates under "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice1033" and organize them into different groups (tabs) on the File|New dialog. We know we can place folders containing word templates under the user template folder and the folder will appear as a tab but how does word separate the templates contained under "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice1033" into different groups?

The behavior of the templates that come with Word is built into the application; Word "knows" which ones they are and organizes them into tabs that are not based on subfolders, unlike custom templates. I don't think you can modify this (except uninstalling them, which makes the tabs go away)

It is stored in the registry in a form that you really don't want to edit. Have a look at the registry key

Those registry keys are exactly the same. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT is an alias for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareClasses, just as HKEY_CURRENT_USER is an alias for one of the branches under HKEY_USERS.

Hi Jim:
If you want to organize them, what you have to do is first copy each of the templates that you want to keep into new folders & subfolders & move them away from the templates folder. Then uninstall all the templates from Add/Remove. Once you do that, the tabs should disappear. Then you can move folders back into the templates folder & they should show up as tabs.

2 warnings! First, although I've read that this will work, I haven't tried it. Secondly, I know there are a couple of templates or wizards that either shouldn't or can't be uninstalled. The problem is, I can't remember which ones. I "think" that I read this in Woody's Office Watch. I'll see if I can find it.
