How do you delete Address bar entries? (5.5)

Does anyone know how to delete the list of entries you've keyed into the address bar in Internet Explorer 5.5? Deleting files through Tools, Internet Options..., etc doesn't delete them. Deleting history also doesn't delete them. It seems like I read once they are stored someplace else. Is there a way to delete the address bar entries through Windows Explorer? Does anyone know where they would be stored?

Where these are stored, I'm not sure. I know in past threads on history, that history storage is not a neat, packaged answer and the history is stored among a number of places.

Also Blaine I think you have a shot at surgically removing each URL here:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerTypedURLs]

The problem with this is that there are usually many more url's than are entered here at the registry.

Also if you open history, and find a particular URL, right click it and in the popup men, click delete.

    Blaine--

You should be able to at tools>options>clear history. At least a lot of people say you can. I never tried. The last 25 url entries are stored in the registry.

Clearing the Internet Explorer Address Bar History

There are 2 utilities that will delete the typed entries.

    1) Edit URL's is

    2) Purge IE by Sandi Hardmier is one. Here's a Screenshot Purge IE.and Purge IE Product Info.

    Here's a bonus:

Unixdaemon: Customising the Internet Explorer Address Bar

    SMBP

Ed SMBP: Also check out IE Address Bar Editor It's and its mystery name says it could help. If you delete from the right pane at the registry key above, don't forget to rename the keys remaining so that you'll have consecutive URL's labled if you want to go back.

The typed URLs are kept in the registry. The usual cautions about editing a registry apply. First, back it up. If you are comfortable with editing the registry, you can delete the typed urls by opening regedit & going to:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerTypedURLs

Then delete each of the values under it, leaving the default. You may have to reboot.

Some of them are kept in the registry Phil. I have a ratio of many more typed URL's than there are registry entries as I pointed out above--and so do a lot of machines whose keys I looked at since I posted that this afternoon.

That is correct. I must not have seen your <post#=300510>post 300510</post#> when I posted my reply, as I try not to duplicate information already given.

Re: How do you delete Address bar entries? (5.5)

    A few quick things:

    1) It is not possible to FULLY delete the items in the Address bar as the items come from multiple sources: TypedURL's, History folder, Favorites, My Computer, Desktop, Search History, the vertical Explorer bar -- are a few that come to mind quickly. Simply type a "c" in the Address bar and you will find your C: drive -- that comes from My Computer..

    2) Using the Clear History button under Internet Options will clear out BOTH the History folder and the TypedURL list from your registry -- you don't have to use regedit.

    3) If you are seeing OLD History items not being deleted when you use the Clear History button, then your History folder is corrupt.

Thanks for this. I remember the history multiple source threads and in a simplistic way I feared with a history connection that the address bar would have that situation. I should have figured in this that if clearing history won't do this, it might be corrupt. On one hand you might think the reasons for clearing the address url's might be the same for clearing history, but some might want a way to clear one without the other.

    Phil--

Thanks for your post and the info. I wasn't trying to make any point about the info already posted--was lamenting that you couldn't cleanly clear all the url's at the registry key. So apparently going to history should work if you want to also clear history, and the registry listings that do correspond would let you get rid of selected url's.

Re: How do you delete Address bar entries? (5.5)

From what I can tell, the Clear History button clears only what it finds in the registry. First, it does find the "TypedURLs" key and deletes all those entries. Next, it looks in the registry to find out the names of the History.IE5 subfolders. It then deletes those folders.

The problem with this mechanism is that the registry can be wrong -- yes, I know that is hard to believe. Well, since it takes the data in the registry to be the gospel truth, it does not actually look in the History folder to see if there is any "stray data" floating around.

In contrast, the AutoComplete mechanism is different. It gets it's History data directly from the History folder. So, if you have a situation where the History folder contains something that the registry doesn't know about, you end up with a situation where the "Clear History" button fails to clear all the History!

Very helpful and it's not hard to believe at all that reg entries, keys, strings could be wrong--they get distorted and some of the marketing of the reg cleaners/reg repairers highlights that they can.

I don't know if unkumunka's point about cookies could also account for some added entries.

No. The cookies folder is not queried during the creation of the Address bar drop-down list.

Besides, the AutoComplete function is not that sophisticated -- it just lists things alphabetically. All of your cookies have the same first several letters (your user name). Just start typing your user name and you will see no cookies appear.

I did find this from Microsoft: How to Use the AutoComplete Feature in Internet Explorer 5 and 6

Which has this statement and list:

The list of matches that the AutoComplete feature suggests for a Web address, folder, or program name is determined by examining the following items:

I have NOT run 5.5 for some time, but I never had any problems with clearing the history using Tools, Internet Options, and then the General Tab.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

No one ever said you did! But it appears that Blaine does...

(Do you think he is just making it up to get attention?)
