Outlook & Windows Messenger (XP home / 2002)

I seem to have messenger installed and with a life of its own. If running, it shows an icon in the system tray - bit like a chess pawn. I never knowingly enable it or have it running in the background. It seems to enjoy some sort of relationship with outlook. even though it is not running, when I am in outlook my firewall shows very frequent accesses from messenger to the internet (msmsg.exe is accessing the internet). I tried disabling it by renaming the executable file but then outlook took a very long time to load.

What is the relationship? Is it doing any harm? can I stop it?

    Thanks

Mike, in XP MS Messenger installs by default, but there is an option to remove it which I did almost immediately when the Bride got her XP machine, with no performance penalty. It's been so long since I removed it that I do not remember the procedure, I hope someone else will, but I recommend that you re-enable the executable by renaming it, then right click its tray icon, and search for the "remove me" option.

There's an option in Outlook's Tools|Options to Enable Messaging on one of the later tabs. You appear to have this enabled. Disable it.

Then, take the steps outlined in <!post=this post,300456>this post<!/post>.
