Scroll back to Previous Web pages

Hey, I just found a neat little keyboard trick. I was inserting a CD that I didn't want to auto play so I had the shift key depressed. At the same time, I was bring up the lounge main page and wanted to go to the bottom - so, naturally, I used my scroll ball on my mouse. Guess what happened!! My lounge web site was replaced by the previous page I had visited, and the one before that, and the one before that. I could scroll up and down between the four pages while I had the shift key depressed.

I wonder if it works with other browers (I'm using IE 6.?)

    Tim - that's a great find! I never knew...

Leave it to Microsoft to provide yet another navigation shortcut. (Perhaps that is one reason software continues to bloat - more and more new features like that are added with every version.)

    Good stuff! <img src=/S/thumbup.gif border=0 alt=thumbup width=15 height=15>

    I've never seen that, either!

Excellent catch, kind sir. I'll run it in the next Windows Watch.

Want me to mention you by name, or include a favorite Web address?

That almost certainly explains how I managed to change font sizes whilst installing updates the other week. I knew that I hadn't touched any menus that could have done it.

In Excel Ctrl+Scoll changes the size of all the cells.

Re: Scroll back to Previous Web pages

Just a couple of things I noted on this good find. As I was afraid, it doesn't work in Mozilla 1.4. Even in my up to date IE 6, it also seems to have a somewhat "short" memory, depending whether you arrive at a web page by manually typing in the URL, selecting a URL from the drop-down URL bar, or picking from your favorites. I didn't take the time to figure out the pattern. But it's certainly a nice to know keyboard-mouse trick!

WOW - a personal reply from woody - another thing gets ticked off my to-do list! Now all that I need to do re the lounge is to get a star post.

Sure, mentioned me by name is fine and if you can include this web site (http://www.geocities.com/ruff_hi/ - my home page), especially the part about how to make vegemite toast, that would be great.

    Thanks,

Re: Scroll back to Previous Web pages

    Hans--

I've always found and just tested it that to use Ctrl+the scroll wheel in the mouse to "rheostat" font size I have to go to Options>General Tab>Accessibility> and put a check in the box "Ignore font on specified web pages," or it won't work. It's one of my favorite settings, because it allows me to use the scroll wheel to adjust the size of a font anywhere on a web page--the only downside is that very rarely a page will overlap and this is rare times a year with a lot of computer use--and if that happens I just take the check out to make the page behave normally.

Re: Scroll back to Previous Web pages

    SMBP,

On my system, "Ignore font sizes specified on Web pages" is Off, yet Ctrl+scroll wheel changes the font size, but - as is logical - only for those parts of web pages whose font size hasn't been set explicitly by the designer. Here in the Lounge, for instance, most font sizes are fixed, but the line containing links to "Quick Skin Switch" and the line containing "WOPR Frontpage" do change in size when I use Ctrl+scroll wheel.

Re: Scroll back to Previous Web pages

I did some experimenting with the CTRL-<Scroll Wheel> and it looks to me like only fonts specified with a relative font size on the page actually change size. For example when reading posts in this forum, the headers change size, but the post itself does not change font size.

    Seth--

When you did this, how did you configure that checkbox I'm referencing?

Re: Scroll back to Previous Web pages

    Hans--

Sorry for not getting back sooner. Missed the post for few days and I don't use email lounge notifications. I'd appreciate your take on this. If I keep the check in "Ignore fonts" in the lounge and elsewhere (probably exceptions dep. on web page but I'm not seeing them) I can scroll+Ctrl to modify size. On this page with this box open typing, I can also modify font size with View>Text Size--all of the lounge fonts (hyperlinks or not) but text size in this reply box doesn't change.

With the check out, I get very small fonts--smaller than I'm comfortable with and any of the typing is annoyingly light--the only fonts on the lounge page affected by View>Text Size are "English" (for me) by the flags and a hyperlink at the bottom--"msn office communities."

So for me, and I can't explain why--I'm hoping you can--with "Ignore Font Size" off I can't make the scroll wheel work at all. With it on, I can, and View>Text Size defaults to smallest when you check the box but can rachet the font size up.

I mentioned this over in the Office forum, but in Word, holding Ctrl and scrolling zooms in and out in page view. Great for multi-page docs.
