    Random Disk Activity

WIN2K Professional - anyone know of any reason for every so often (at least twice a day) the harddisk bursts into life, and the floppy drive is checked for no apparent reason. No user interaction is occuring at the time (although they are logged on), there is no discernable pattern. Things eliminated so far:
    - Outlook Journal is not turned on
    - virus checker is not scanning
    - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...Product=win2000 has been checked and the value is 960
    - The occurences do not seem to be in a pattern with a reboot
    - No files appear to be modified on the system drive at the times when the activity takes place.
    - findfast is not being used, and never has been.

Any theories at all would be helpful, no matter how wild (I have had some pretty wild theories to try and explain this one away already)

    Re: Random Disk Activity

    You said anything.

#1.Have you ran a program like Adware or Spybot, to check and see if you have any Spyware on your system?
#2.Do you have a Floppy Drive Icon on your Desktop? If so, remove it and see what happens.
#3.Do you have a Defrag or something that is possibly time scheduled.
#4.Something is randomly searching for you Floppy Drive and we have to figure out what it is. One thing you could do is turn off or disable Programs one at a time untill the problem stops and maybe you could figure out what is trying to use it.
#5.Disable Floppy Drive Seek in BIOS.

    Re: Random Disk Activity

    Followind along...

    -Is the Indexing service running?
-Are there network shares that someone else might be accessing?
-WinNT+ is rather known for waiting some period of time and caching things from memory to disk, but this does not explain floppy access.
    -Recheck that Indexing service... heh.
-Is the machine running some P2P software (Kazaa, BearShare, LimeWire...)?

    Re: Random Disk Activity

thanks to you both, but I currently reckon there is a hex on the machine.... but anyway
    - no anti-spyware progs are installed, or P2P software for sure.
    - no shares (aside from default admin shares c$ etc,)

By indexing service, do you mean Findfast? cos it definitely isn't running - it creates a logfile in C:winntsystem32ffastlog.txt, which aint there. Antivirus is possible, but kinda reluctant to turn it off for any length of time to test.

    Re: Random Disk Activity

No I don't mean FindFast, but the Indexing service is *VERY* similar. Are you familiar with Win2k services? Check your control panel for the Administrative Tools icon. The services should be in there. You can also right-click your taskbar and click Task Manager and see if the indexing service is running in the Processes list. I don't remember exactly what it is called but you should recognise the root word "index" in the name... Indexing.exe, Index.exe something like that.

    Re: Random Disk Activity

aaah, I have it now. Unfortunately, the Indexing Service it is set to Manual and is stopped. (The service lists cisvc.exe as its exe by the way, so I presume this would appear in Task Manager, but doesn't in this case, nor anything involving 'index').

    Re: Random Disk Activity

I too was getting lots of random HD activity (although NO floppy accesses) and I changed the way the swapfile is managed. Set it to a hard constant of 2.5 times my ram size and have had a noticeable decrease in HD accesses. Just set the min/max to the same value and the system won't keep trying to change it on the fly.
