    Nothing but ruler (Word 97)

This is a remote diagnosis, for a friend who called. An employee has done something to her Word 97 that has hidden nearly all controls. There are no pulldowns, no buttonbars, nothing but a (titlebar + docname) and ruler in Normal View. Hotkeys work, and you can type. F11 and blowing away normal.dot have no effect. This has gotta be something simple, right? I didn't know 97 was so flexible (g), and don't have one running to help him specifically.

    Suggestions?

Since you can't remove the Menu Bar, it is most likely hidden somewhere near the edge of the monitor (I once had a user have it just barely visible above the sys tray). Try pressing Alt+f, and note where the File menu pops in from. You can then drag it back. After that, right click in gray space on the menu bar to select other toolbars.

If conE's diagnosis is correct, it appears that the "done something to her Word 97" was to push the top of the window into obscurity at the top of the screen. Might be worth suggesting running Word in a maximized window, to prevent recurrence.

Thanks all. It's not an offscreen windows problem. Its really a bollixed Word.

I've saved Phil's checklist to disk in case the friend calls again.

Two other scenarios: see <post#=290657>post 290657</post#> and <post#=290627>post 290627</post#>. (Beware, that thread goes off on a tangent...)

Re: Nothing but ruler (Word 97)

Update from the world of remote control problem solving:

It's an XP machine (with 97!??), and the friend fixed the problem instantly by giving the woman a new logon, and ?presumably a fresh registry key. Corrupt key, right? Would this be a valid addition to PhilR's excellent treatise - just log on as someone else and see whether your problem goes away? Might be a cute addtion to the usual winword/a and delete_normal.dot tips, for XP users.
