    Cursor getting hijacked...? (6.0)

As I'm typing this message, IE keeps taking away my cursor. That means I have to click inside the little message window to continue writing. This problem just started yesterday, I think. The cursor disappears at the moment I see a little green save progress meter flash across the IE status bar. It doesn't matter if I'm actively typing--the cursor just goes away! This happens about every 15-20 seconds.

I also see at the left end of the status bar the words, "java scriptopSmilies()." What the $%@*&^^ is that all about, and is there some connection with my problem? I have a firewall and the latest, up-to-date Norton AV in place. Now the text on the status bar says, "java scriptopTags()." Lemme get outta here before something else goes awry!

When you are creating or editing a post, there are links to the 1-Click TagPanel and Smilies immediately above the editing area. If you hover the mouse over a link, the status bar will display the target of the link. In many cases, that is a web address, but these two links execute a JavaScript function.

    HI Lucas:
Does this happen only when typing a message & does it happen at all sites?

    Re: Cursor getting hijacked...? (6.0)

Hello, Phil: I haven't noticed it anywhere else, but this evening I haven't been anywhere but here. Just now I did a little careful observation, and this is what I've observed:

    1. Hans is right about the Smilies and Tags--my mouse pointer was hovering over those links. This apparently has nothing to do with the problem at hand.
    2. The "event" seems to occur about every 45 seconds, and it appears to occur only while the message-creation page is active. To check this, I moved back to the Access forum and stared the status bar for a while. Nothing seemed to happen, although I did notice the mouse pointer twitch a little. Of course, there was no cursor to observe....
    3. The "event" closely resembles a Word AutoSave action. It happens so quickly that I can't read the text that flashes oh so briefly in the status bar.

I'll visit some other sites and see what happens. Maybe I can start writing a message to my Congressman....

    Lucas--

Do you start typing in the box, the cursor disappears--and then you have to click the mouse again to get the cursor back to the place of the next letter to be typed, and with every disappearance is their some "little green save progress meter flash"? I've never seen the green progress meter flash event while typing or otherwise. I'm familiar with the File>Save progress meter, and if I want to say save a thread I'll save as a .mht (second down because it saves better and is more stable over time)--not the subject of your post just trying to relate to what you see.

Where does the status bar you see and the text locate itself in relation to where you are typing and the cursor is supposed to be?

Do you jave Java VM from Sun or the MS virtual machine and if you do what boxes pertaining to them do you have checked in Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab list?

I'm confused about something. You say it happens when you are typing in the box to post, but your mouse was hovering over links to smiles and tags. It happens both in the box to type text and while hovering over smiles and tags?

    Re: Cursor getting hijacked...? (6.0)

You got it right: every time this event occurs, the cursor disappears from the box where I'm composing my message, and I have to click where I want the cursor to be in order to continue composing my message. (The event has occurred twice so far as I compose this message!) Each time it occurs, the green progress meter flashes in the status bar. (Now a third occurence.)

Where does the status bar you see and the text locate itself in relation to where you are typing and the cursor is supposed to be?

I'm not sure I understand the question. I mean the status bar at the bottom of the IE window, where it usually displays "Done" at the left end. The progress meter flashes over on the right side, near the little security eyeball and the Internet icon.

And now here's some information that relates to a question Phil had: This morning, I had occasion to compose a message in another web site, and this event never occurred even once! So it appears to be a problem only when I'm composing in the Lounge.

I do have Microsoft Virtual Machine. In the Internet options/Advanced, there are three boxes that could be checked under VM; only the third one is checked at the moment (JIT compiler for VM enabled). I see nothing about Java VM from Sun. Truth to tell, I know nothing about either of those things. What might they have to do with this situation?

    Re: Cursor getting hijacked...? (6.0)

To answer your last question first, I thought that it might have to do with Java script, a subject I know relatively little about like most. The check in the last box I believe is a default when you have MVM. Some of the IE mavens might want to weigh in on a possible connection.

You answered my question on location. I wasn't sure if you meant the page loading status bar that sometimes stops showing when memory is low or you have two many windows open relative to available RAM.

So you're saying this only happens in the Lounge.

When did this begin? Where I'm going with this is a simplistic but possibly effective solution which is to try System Restoring to before this began happening. I'm gathering that it's recent vintage enough to be able to find a restore point before it happened--the default is SR saves points for 90 days but they appear ghosted out until you click onto the correct back month.

On your first point, the Java Virtual Machine (which processes Java applets) and JavaScript are completely unrelated. Netscape made a huge mistake in naming its scripting language JavaScript and people have been confused ever since.

    Re: Cursor getting hijacked...? (6.0)

The fact that it happens every 45 minutes suggest that it may be the google ads which are part of the cause. The same ads are displayed here: http://woodyswatch.com/office/subscribe.asp. Does it happen there as well when you try and enter your email address (to test it, please wait 45 seconds <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>)?

The real question of course is: what is different on your system as opposed to almost everyone elses ? Have you got the latest version of your browser installed ?
    Cheers, Claude.

I've always recognized the point they were unrelated. It's about the first thing you see the first time you go for a web page on JAVA or JAVA scripts. My point is not that they are related, but that some part of JAVA or unrelated JAVA script issue might have caused the cursor highjack Jefferson. I must have seen the statment they are unrelated about 3500 times. This makes 3501. I wasn't advocating a case to relate them.

    Lucas--

What I'm trying to figure out is since you've been using the Lounge with your different browsers and with IE in your current configuration with your patches for a good while now. No problems until when? And I'd very much like to know what's going on and I'm sure you would, if this phenomenon is recent vintage and you know approximately when it began, why not see if System Restore allows you to use the lounge without this the way you always have been.

It may be hard to remember if you didn't pay any attention to that check Legare just screen shot:

Move System Caret with Focus/Selection Changes

I'm not sure what the default is I believe checked (mine is)--but taking out the check isn't affecting me in the lounge or anywhere else I can see.

Maybe some change took the check out and putting it in will help you with this problem though.
