Uninstallable Network Items (XP Home SP1)

OK, Now that I've taken care of my CD-RW problem, Here is another strange thing I noticed while rumaging through the Device Manager.
The screenshot below shows two items in my Network listing in DM. They show things that are "disabled", with the red X in them.
When I try to removeuninstall them, I get a box saying the uninstall was unsuccessful, the device MAY be required to boot up the computer .

My question is: If they are disabled, how can they be used to boot up? How can I get rid of them, since they ARE disabled?

You may have disabled protocols/services bound to those interfaces. See if you can remove/uninstall them in the networking control panel (or whatever that is now called in XP).

I can't explain your problem, but I can tell you what the two things are...

PPTP is Port-to-Port Tunneling Protocol
L2TP is Level 2 Tunnelling Protocol.

They are used for two different types of VPN connections, so if you don't use VPN I wouldn't worry about it.

I think that windows "uses" them to start up because they are used by the wizard that configures dial up networking.

I don't know where the place is that you are talking about. In Control Panel>Network Connections, the only thing showing is my Broadband connection & LAN connection to the DSL modem. No mention of any WAN setting in there. Have I confused that with the location you are speaking of?

Hi Stuart,

I don't use VPN at all, which gives me all the more impetus to get rid of these unnecessary entries. I'm not really worried about them, since things seem to be working fine, but I am the type that wants a more orderly kind of system, without the little annoyances showing when ever I look In DM. "Disabled" translates to unused and subject to deletion to me.

If you check properties for your various Network Connections, you should find one that has the TCP/IP settings (in my case, this is called Network Bridge, I have no idea why). What do you have listed under "This connection uses the following items"?

Jefferson,

The only thing I have in there is TCP/IP.

Bob--

I think that where Stuart and Jefferson are steering you is here:

Ctrl Panel>Network Connections>General Tab>Properties>TCP/IP (Last Item) Hit the Properties Button after selecting it. (See Below)

You can drag any of the slide out items from your LAN Connection to the Start Menu for Faster Access if you like.

Do you have any connections that bear any resemblance to "WAN Miniport" (per your first graphic)?

No, none at all. No other reference than TCP/IP as shown.

The first graphic shot in DM, now shows them as "hidden"??

I found some interesting Google results for "WAN miniport" uninstall including these detailed instructions. However, I haven't actually *tried* anything.

Re: Uninstallable Network Items (XP Home SP1)

Jefferson,

That link got me to the right area in the reg Ok. Following the rather lengthy steps, I deleted the references to WAN mini ports & was then able to uninstall the entries in DM. All seems to be fine so far. I'll keep my eye on things to make sure, but I did export the original sub keys for safe keeping if need be. Good find ! Thanks.
