    Outlook 2000 - Read Receipts

Any ideas why read receipts work for messages sent in RTF but not for those sent in HTML format? I am aware of the general views about sending messages in HTML but one of my clients prefers to use it anyway and also wants receive receipts when messages are read.

he should get replies back no matter the format but they may not process and track if not RTF.

Am I being thick here? <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15> Ticks are in the process boxes. Are you saying that despite that they will not appear unless in RTF? I've never been dead sure about what that process requests and process receipts stuff really means in terms of what actually happens.

Are you sure that the receipts are being sent? I normally will NOT send back a receipt, and did NOT before retirement at work.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I don't think it is related to the format; it is related to the settings at the mail server and mail client. In my experience:

    (1) Exchange server usually sends back a Delivered receipt.

    (2) Some Outlook users with Exchange servers send back a Read receipt. Other presumably either have disabled this from inside Outlook, or it is suppressed by their server.

    (3) Netscape client often pops up a dialog: do you want to return a receipt? Users presumably can suppress that and either return them or not.

In short, it is a request, and the recipient need not honor it.

I understand that sending receipts is a choice thing. In this instance it is not disabled by the recipient. I did a test. Sent an HTML message. Got no receipt but the recipient replied. Then I sent an RFT to the same person. Got a receipt and then their reply. I'm just interested in the reasons why this happens. <img src=/S/crazy.gif border=0 alt=crazy width=15 height=15>

    A detective is required...is your last name really Sherlock? <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

I turned on my receipt returner and sent myself an HTML message requesting a receipt. I read it, checked mail, and got a Read receipt back from myself. So I don't think it's something intrinsic to the HTML format.

I use Outlook as my editor for everything. Hope this helps.

Yes my last name is Sherlock! Not detecting too well on this one though am I? <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> I thought it might be the Exchange server, but the same thing happens when I send to individuals. Hmmm ... maybe it's something uniquely Australian. They reckon we're a bit strange down here. <img src=/S/nuts.gif border=0 alt=nuts width=15 height=15>

it could be the server, but onloy if they are going off-site. but normally, all reciepts would be blocked. it may be letting TNEF ones pass (doesn't know they are there) and strips it off the text ones (html is just plan text with codes in the body)
