    Compaq Portable

I have a 1982 (yes, a 1982) Compaq Portable computer which I recently dug out from the back of a closet and tried to boot up. Unfortunately I receive a keyboard error and the boot process fails. According to the instruction manuals the keyboard contacts need to be cleaned. Well I have cleaned them but still have the boot problem.

    Anyone have a suggestion?

    Thanks,
    John

As a long shot you could try Compaq themselves. They just may be willing to help out in view of the historic interest of this box.

I don't think you can try another keyboard, because the cable is "captive" both ends, AFAICR...

These devices were portable in the same way as a hundredweight sack of potatoes is portable...

I've never seen one of those first hand, so I'm not sure about this statement/question: is it possible you can un-plug the keyboard from the CPU and blow some compressed air into the socket and the end-connector on the cable? Sounds far fetched, but maybe there's something there "distorting" clean contact. (or maybe even a bent pin)

If it's any help to you, the Compaq part number for that keyboard was 100487-001 but I have no idea where you could buy one.

I'd guess that one of the key actuators is stuck down. Have you gently banged all over the danged thing to try to unstick them?
