    hard drive failed (windowsXP)

when I start up my computer, and before the WindowsXP open, a blue color window shows up, saying that I have to check for viruses and restart the computer, but how can I check for the viruses, when it doesn't let me proceed to the Windows? i also tried to start the computer from the "last working configuration" and I get the same message. What can I do about that? Please if anybody knows, it would be great b/c I have saved up pictures on there that are very important to me. Also, I tried to huck the hard drive with a new computer and set the hard drive as a slave drive, I could open the windows, but when I went to get my data out of the hard drive, it gave me the "denied access" warning, so I could not open the folder that I had my pictures in it.

You're not giving us very much information to work with here. But if you still have the first HD connected to another computer as a slave, open Windows Explorer and expand the file tree until you have the folder containing the items you want to save on the right side of the screen. Right click on that folder and drag it to the Desktop and release the mouse button and choose Copy from the dropdown menu. This should copy the folder and all it's contents to the desktop of the second computer.

Then burn the contents of the folder to a CD or other removable media and RETURN both computers to the place you bought them and get your money back !!!!!!!!!

If you can get a look at the error on the blue screen that'd be helpful but if you can get to Windows you can read it in Event Viewer later. Last Known Good has the disadvantages of a high failure rate and the snapshot used is from last boot.

I don't see any evidence your hard drive has failed here yet or has been fried or that the problem is your hard drive at all at this point. Try Doc's suggestion or this:

Try tapping the F8 key and booting to Safe Mode with a Command Prompt and using the command to bring up System Restore and then use it. Here's some help for that:

What kind of computer do you have, and do you know which antivirus software you run? Trend Micro OEMs a product that runs from a ROM on the system board (I really should remember the name, but I can't); I'm not aware of any other antivirus products that run before Windows loads. If this window doesn't have a well known brand name on it, I suspect it is in itself evidence of some sort of security breach.
