    Windows XP Boot Problems (1)

    Hi All,
I Have this Windows X Home machince that refuses to Boot up correctly. It had a power Supply fault, which caused damage to the Motherboard. With the new board,it refuses to boot up correctly. It goes through the normal startup BIOS settings etc, then jumps to the screen that has safe mode, command prompt mode, start Normally etc. No Matter which selection I make it then gets caught in an endless loop, and returns to the same screen. I booted from a floppy ok, the file system is still NTFS, but thats about as far as it goes. I have attempted to run system recovery from the CD, which may work if I could get past the Admin password that some one has put on. The company that built the Computer went Bust, so getting the password is not an option. Apart from wipng the drive and reloading.......Any suggestions would be a great help.. Cheers, Kiwi <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15>

Try booting to the Recovery Console and running "chkdsk /r". This sometimes fixes an endless loop boot problem. Which new mobo did you get?

Posting your system specs would be very helpful since you just installed a new mobo in the context of this problem. Also are you seeing any error messages at all at any time?

The most common cause of sporadic reboots is a failing power supply, or bad power source. Most other hardware failure will be less erratic... Jefferson also mentioned in another thread that Trend Micro can check for viruses pre-boot but I don't think a virus is the problem here.

This will help you get to the Recovery Console if you're unfamiliar with doing this. The Recovery Console is used to perform tasks and repairs when you can't get to windows. I just want you to go there and run "chkdsk /r" right now:

Put in the XP CD. Make sure your bios is configured by going there and checking using whatever key gets you there on your machine so that you have the CD boot first in the boot order. When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts; choose the repair or recover option by pressing R. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console. You will see a list of detected Windows installations--probably one. Input the number associated with the installation you wish to repair and press "Enter." You should be at the RC command prompt.

See for help if you need it with the RC or Safe Mode With Command/System Restore these detailed references with extensive instructions and screen shots:

FYI, this is not a user-installable feature, it needs to be on the system board. It is an OEM option only.

Re: Windows XP Boot Problems (1)

Sorry for th4e delay in sending back a reply to your answers, But I got it working, better tha before. I looked at the threads that were posted and One that Microsoft had put about reinstalling Windows from the CD worked. I loaded the disk in, and went through the motions of installing, at one point it offered to install, as if it was a fresh install, then gave the option to repair, which I did. Ok I had to reactivate windows , but that was minor compared to a fresh install. I then reinstalled windows SP1, since the old one did not install correctly when it was first installed months ago by someone els, ran Norton Win Doc through it, removed the 176 Bits of spyware, total clean out of temp/internet files, and defragged.....now it goes better tahn it ever has.......thanks again for the help.
