    Autocorrect on "FileName"?

    Word97SR2.

I create a new document, save it as MRU2.

I type some more, then try to type "path-and-filename" without the quotes. Note the space after filename.

As I type <Enter> key, Word pops in "MRU2.DOC without the quotes.

Seems to me like some sort of AutoCorrect entry, but I can't find it anywhere.

I just tried it again on an empty document:

    File, New
    File, Saveas, "YouToo"
    filename<Enter>

    Re: Autocorrect on "FileName"?

    Hi Chris,

Very strange... "filename" by itself (with or without spaces) doesn't seem to do anything. The hyphens don't make any difference. any word or character followed by a space and filename[space][Enter] gives the filename.

Just figured it out. It's an AutoText entry (rather than an AutoCorrect entry). Name of entry: Filename. There is also one called "Filename and Path." These insert the docproperty fields { FILENAME } and { FILENAME p }, respectively. These are default AutoText entries in Normal.dot in Word 97 and Word 2000. <img src=/S/bow.gif border=0 alt=bow width=15 height=15>

P.S. Is that really your picture? Somehow I pictured you as looking something like Albert Einstein on one of his frantic days!

Charles, thanks. I don't now why I didn't see that on my examination.

It's news to me that <enter> will trigger autotext; I thought it was restricted to the <F3> key.

When did Albert have a frantic day? I'm sorry about my image. I was trying to brush it up over in VB/VBA so that people didn't think i was too much like Einstein (Brilliant, Musical etc) and went through a mid-life crisis.

    Hi Chris:

Starting with Word 97, Word changed some of the Autotext behavior. In addition to creating catagories based on style definitions, it created an AutoComplete feature which completes an Autotext entry upon pressing enter. The requirements are that the autotext name be at least 4 characters long and that under Tools/AutoCorrect/AutoText tab/, you tick "show autocomplete tip for autotext & dates".

I noticed something while I was experimenting with Word 97. If you create an AutoText with a long name in, say, Style1, the autocomplete tip will show, even if you're typing in normal style. However, with "filename" & with "filename and path", I only get the tip & the <enter> functionality if I type the words in "Header" or "footer" style. Also, you only get the path tip if your document is already saved (which makes sense because there's no path until then).

Thanks, Phil. I just learned about AutoTip!

I have the opposite problem: the filename field is converting itself to text in the footer of a merge form document when it is merged. In other words, it's a proper field code in the main merge form, but upon merging, it has converted into the text result of the filename field code. To make matters worse, the footers of each section have set themselves NOT to be same as previous, so I'll have to go through 50 sections & change them once I get the 1st one fixed.

    Help? <img src=/S/help.gif border=0 alt=help width=23 height=15>

Hmm. I don't know. I might GUESS that when performing a mail-merger Word replaces all field codes with their evaluated text content, so that printer drivers et al don't get messed up.

I think of mail-merge as 'take my data and exit the system with it"
