Smart Quotes (Word 2002)

Our office works primarily in Word Perfect and most of our office uses smart quotes (I no longer do). I have been working in Word quite a bit over the last year and one constant problem I have is when I convert a Word Perfect document to Word 2002, something happens to the smart quotes. On my computer screen, they look fine. If I e-mail the document to a client (most of our clients have earlier versions of Word), the smart quotes turn into either a capital A or an = sign (same problem with smart apostrophes). I have found I can do a find & replace for ^61 and ^64 which takes care of the apostrophe and the ending smart quote but I can't figure out how to do a find for the opening smart quote. This is almost an everyday problem for me. PLEASE HELP.

Re: Smart Quotes (Word 2002)

The smart quotes are actually in a font called "WP typographic symbols". If a user opens the document in Word, and they do not have WordPerfect installed on their pc, they do not have appropriate font to view the quotes. If you convert the document and search for a quotation mark in "WP Typrographic" font and replace it with a quotation mark in Times Roman, it will properly convert the quotes.
Note that when you convert the document on your end, you may not see the problem because you DO have the WP Typo font.

Okay - I feel silly for asking this but how do I search for a wp typographic symbol? I know how to insert symbols but I I can't figure out how to get the symbol into the find field. If I cut and paste the smart quote into the Find field, it searches for a capital A. I know I can "find" the end quote by doing a find for ^64. I figure there must be a ^# for the open quote too. Am I wrong? I'm attaching a doc for your convenience in helping me. THANKS!!!!!

Click More in the Find and Replace dialog. Click in the Find What box, then click the Format dropdown list, select Font..., then the WP Typographic Symbols font. You should now be able to find only characters in this special font. Looking for A should find the opening smart quote.
To replace, click in the Replace box, enter the standard quote character, then click Format, select Font..., then (for instance) Times New Roman.

Note: since I don't have the WP font on my system, I see A, @ and =

Oddly, I have the WordPerfect symbol font and cannot get the replace to work. I think I need to go back and try to remember the funny rules for symbol fonts before further beating my head against this wall.

I tried to write a macro... in fact several times.

None of them seemed to work for all users. My latest attempt is here.

P.S.: Just tested it on MaryAnn's document, and it does seem to work

Wow, that's a serious cleaning.

I opened the document in StarOffice 6.0 (OpenOffice.org 1.0) and it does not handle symbols specially so Find/Replace seemed to work just fine. Of course, a font must be specified for the replace, because otherwise the substitute character remains in the WP font. But not everyone can have a copy of this suite hanging around for emergencies...
