Renaming the Subject Line (Outlook XP)

I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to rename the subject of an email that was receiving in Outlook XP.

Uhm, what do you mean? Do you want to replace the word "Subject" with something else? Or do you want to change the subject of a message you received? If so, you can just click in the subject and edit it, but why?

Why? I frequently change the message subject at work in order for it to be meaningful. idiots who forget that I deal with the entire customer base and send me a message with the subject "Renewal" and no mention of the customer name drive me nuts. So I edit the customer name in. The second most common reason I edit the subject is when an e-mail discusion changes tack, and the subject changes, such as in "Customer X's rates" to "Costs of the product Customer X has".

Funny thing. I just got a resignation from one of my employees. The Subject was "Resignation". When I forwarded it to my boss, I changed it to "<employee's name> Resignation" so she wouldn't freak out and think I was resigning.

Good points (in both your replies). I usually don't change the subject of e-mails I receive, but I do frequently change it when I reply or forward.

I think you need to open the message and then choose Edit > Edit Message in order to change the subject line. Outlook should recording the date and time of the modification, but there would be no other evidence (perhaps the Internet headers would still show the original subject line... hmmm).

... and what's wrong with freaking out the boss, from time to time? Makes them more managable (pun intended). But to be really good at it you would need to delete the FW: as well! The current issue of WEE has a article on this (changing subject, not freaking out boss).

I can edit the subject line of a received e-mail message without first selecting Edit | Edit Message. I do have to select Edit | Edit Message if I want to edit the body of the e-mail.

    I'm using Outlook 2002 SP-2.

(Piling on alert.) Yes, appears that you can edit the Subject line of a message in any format, but you can't ever edit the From, To, CC, or Date Fields in the displayed header, and how you edit the Body depends on the message format.

But she had just given me a good appraisal in the morning. (The first formal appraisal in about four years. Yesterday was a day of developments at work.)

I should have checked before posting. I guess I memorized doing that without checking whether I could do it without.
