    Ctrl+DwnArw Selects Numbers (XP)

    In previous versions of Word, Ctrl+Down Arrow moved the cursor down one paragraph. In XP, if it's a bulleted/numbered list, it selects all the bullets/numbers. (If you press it again, it moves down.) Is there a setting to turn this off?

    I don't have the answer, but I find this really annoying, too. I suppose the benefit is that we now have some way to position the selection where we couldn't do so before.

    I found nothing in the newsgroups about turning it off. Creating macros with the names of the built-in commands doesn't seem to overrule the built-in behavior. If it really annoys you, you can create two macros in Normal.dot or in a global template:

    Sub DownPara()
    Selection.MoveDown Unit:=wdParagraph, Count:=1
    End Sub

    Sub UpPara()
    Selection.MoveUp Unit:=wdParagraph, Count:=1
    End Sub

    Next, select Tools | Customize...
    Click Keyboard...
    Make sure that "Save changes in" points to the template that contains the two macros.
    Select "Macros" in the list of Categories.
    Select DownPara in the list of Macros.
    Click in the "Press new shortcut key" box.
    Press Ctrl+down arrow
    Click "Assign".
    Select UpPara in the list of Macros.
    Click in the "Press new shortcut key" box.
    Press Ctrl+up arrow
    Click "Assign".
    Click Close until you're back in the document.
    Verify that Ctrl+arrow now moves by paragraph.

    Thanks. That works, but I've got dozens of users complaining about this, and I was hoping for something simple. Why does MS do things like this? (No response to that question necessary!)

    Hans, am I correct in understanding that if I select a template other than normal for these two macros that the keyboard changes will only be available in that template?

    If you store the macros and the custom keyboard shortcuts in a "standard" template, they will be available only in documents based on that template.
    If you store the macros and the custom keyboard shortcuts in Normal.dot or in a global template (as shown in Tools | Templates and Add-Ins...), they will be available in every document.
